Today we’d like to introduce you to Marly Mcfly.
Marly, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m a self-taught artist that began pursuing my passion for art as a child drawing everything from cartoons, comics, action figures and athletes. Drawing influences from my surroundings, I incorporate the ever-changing world of pop culture into my work, expressing my inner thoughts and experiences. These are captured through layers of bright bold colors and patterns coupled with popular and relevant images from my childhood which are utilized to express myself.
My work is the perfect mix of two prolific genres of contemporary art; pop and urban street art and I’ve successfully exhibited in major international markets including New York, Paris and Tokyo, to name a few and have collaborated with brands such as Nike, the MLB, NBA, 2k, Nickelodeon, Montana cans and Lucasfilms.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth ride but it’s been the most fulfilling. There aren’t any guarantees in my profession anyone can draw a picture but it takes a lot to create something appealing enough to get other people interested in it and that’s a challenge I enjoy. I love trying to create the need or the next big idea.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
“Artist” is the basic way to describe what it is I do, but over the years that continues to evolve into so my more. Yes, artwork is still my bread and butter, but I’m a businessman. Someone has to create jobs. Find opportunities and new partnerships, new places to show work. I’m in charge of marketing, I have to figure out how to gain visibility and get eyes on new products. I’m a designer of anything from Merch to toys. I’m also a consultant and brand partner to others.
