Meet Mark Hanson and Piers Bosler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Hanson and Piers Bosler.

Hi Mark and Piers, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Before we knew each other, we both had similar ideas of finding a building to open a photo studio with excellent natural light, an industrial look and located somewhere outside of the cramped downtown LA. It was at a similar time that we had each found ourselves in the hidden gem where we now run Dayglow Studios LA. We had both opened a studio to shoot in and to rent to other productions. Living and working in the same building, we eventually found that we had similar interests and ideas about imagery and photography. After several years of running our studios individually, we decided to merge our business with the idea to not only open up more studios but to build a community of photographers and other creatives. We feel our occupations naturally lend themselves to everyone fighting or competing for work and popularity rather than supporting one another in the pursuit of success as a photographer… so we opened Dayglow Studios LA, a place built by creatives, for creatives to shoot, explore ideas, and gather for events.

Today we have four studios under the same roof. It has also been very helpful that we both have experience in building, construction, and set design. We love creating in our spaces, as well as opening our doors to other photographers. While the studios have been very successful we feel that a big part of our success also comes in the form of meeting others that work in our field. We have made and continue to meet people we genuinely call friends.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Yes, this city can be relentless as we all know. It is a constant hustle, but that hasn’t stopped us from expanding and continuing to grow our business.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Mark specializes in fashion and commercial photography, while Piers specializes in portraits and fine art photography. What are we most proud of? I think we can both say working for ourselves and making it in a business saturated with imagery and now photo studios. You have to have an extremely strong passion towards your craft if you’re going to make it in Los Angeles and we definitely have that. One thing that we feel sets us apart is simply our incredible work ethic.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Relationships, our friends keep us motivated in seeing each other’s work and keeping our passion alive. We love when a great photo set comes up from one of our friends and we can really appreciate their vision and artistry. It can also light a fire under us to create something of our own to share. Travel, to continue to expand our imagination we must see the world and ourselves outside of our borders. We both love to experience new things, especially in foreign countries, for personal and creative growth. Balance, we cannot create freely with an abundance of stress nor an abundance of leisure. There is that sweet spot in work and play that we are always trying to land in.
