Meet Mario Romano of Mario Romano Design & Development in Santa Monica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mario Romano.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m focused on the intersection between art & science, or design & technology. With decades of construction experience, I’ve been able to combine digital design technology with feasible and reliable construction methods to realize architectural stories.

Has it been a smooth road?
The challenges have been intense, in order to achieve any of these complex geometries, I had to practice, sometimes in my very own backyard building small structure and dressing them with metal “skins” We learned out to install, waterproof and attach. Those techniques are not accounted for in the digital world. What’s fascinating to us is DESIGN RESEARCH. We take the real world data and feed it back into the digital world, therefore when we create something beautiful in the computer there is a technique to build it, and realize it, no matter how complex or intricate.

We specialize in ICONIC Architecture. Designing and building homes that are wholly unique, classical and inspiring a sense of wonder.

I would have to say I’m most proud of the WAVE HOUSE. The response has been beyond my wildest expectations. I receive publishing request from around the world on a weekly basis. People stop in front of the home and take pictures, it’s been called a landmark.

We have numbers houses around Los Angeles in various stages. Next is our interior wall system named, MR WALLS, using Corian. It provides an interior architectural language that until now has been unavailable. It’s a breakout- and the essence of design technology.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, Los Angeles is perhaps one of the best cities for design and architecture, namely because there is so much undeveloped and low density spaces. We have so many neighborhoods that can be improved and there is space to design stories, and demonstrate how parametric and organic design can both harmonize with the natural environment and the physical community at the same time. LA is open minded, we are still the Wild West in a way.
