Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcelo Petrella
Hi Marcelo, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m originally from São Paulo, Brazil. Graduated in Business/Marketing. Moved to LA in 2000. Dove into the “back then – brand new” world of motion graphics. Started directing commercials in 2007. Since 2013 I have been running Fellow with my business partner, Vincent Wauters, working on commercial projects for advertising agencies and brands.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not. This is a high stress, very competitive field with constant hurdles to challenge you. You lose more than you win. I think the biggest struggle is learning how to channel the losses into positive knowledge. Information that will be crucial for the next one..
We’ve been impressed with Fellow, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a creative studio, working on commercial content for agencies and brands. I am a live action director and my business partner, Vincent Wauters is a Visual Effects Supervisor. We lead a team of producers, designers, editors, animators, colorists from start to finish on video projects.
Most of our work tends to be in sports, tech and automotive, and anything in between. We are great at translating complex tech into visually engaging and easy to digest storytelling.
I am particularly proud of the work I’ve done over the years in the golf sector, where sports and tech meets and it naturally became one of our specialties.
We want to visualize more of these complex tech stories, from different industries. There is so much exciting technology emerging not only in consumer electronics, sports and cars, but also in biotech, sustainability, aerospace, and fintech to name a few. We definitely want to collaborate with brands in these spaces.
How do you think about luck?
Luck is for sure part of it. Nothing like being in the right place at the right time, but it is not nearly as important as putting in the work. I think I had been in the right place and right time a few times, but only because I was prepared, I could capitalize on that moment.
