Meet Lucas Hive

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucas Hive.

Lucas, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in Uberlândia city of Brazil. After five years playing basketball and graduating from high school in 2011, Being a seIf-taught dancer inspired by hip hop music videos, I joined a professional dance company(Cia Balé de Rua) through the project of new talents in 2012 after one month in this project. The dance company “Cia Balé de Rua” was my “school life as a University” for five years (2012-2016). There I trained in styles such as ballet, contemporary, Street Dance, Capoeira, Samba, Afro and Percussion. We had rehearsal 6 hours per day Monday to Friday studying and creating Shows to perform in many cities and countries. With the company, I Became a professional Dancer and I had the opportunity to perform in 6 countries (Uruguai – Montevideo, France – Paris, UK – London, Australia – Sydney, Israel – Tel Aviv, U.S. – Lewiston).

In 2013, I got exposed to hip hop and Jazz Funk class in the Beyoncé Dancers Workshop in Rio De Janeiro. After this day, I felt more interested to try more dance styles with different teachers from my country and outside searching to improve more my body in dance. In 2015, I worked with Pabllo Vittar as a dancer and choreographer for “Minaj” Music video and her first Tour “Open Bar”.

Looking for auditions to see if I was in the right way, in 2016 I decided to move to São Paulo to be part of Millennium Dance Complex Brazil company. Hungry for more knowledge, inspired by my dreams I moved in the same week after watched The Madonna Documentary. After four months in São Paulo, I got my first big commercial at TV about the Carnival Party (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRgrMzZqAEY). After, I was working in music video with Queer Artists like Anitta, Pabllo Vittar, Gloria Groove, Danna Lisboa and many others…

I make my chance for things works! If I wanna be in any future Music Video for any artist, I make my dance video before and tagged in the artist. One of the big opportunities that I’ve got was like this for work as a dancer in “Bumbum de Ouro” of Gloria Groove music video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWaOGMntBlY). Even when I’m not in the music video I make my own, creating space for other dancers of my community, bringing the fashion, good editing, cool video shoots and a nice background (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r00-keuOwB8).

After two years in São Paulo working in the dance industry, I went through difficult times being gay and not feeling save living in my country for be who I am. Through this, I was looking for an opportunity to leave my country and in 2018, I got approved in one audition to work in an Entertainment Park (Ocean Park) in Hong Kong for three months as a dancer. Then I got a new contract in the same park for the great job that we did in the first one. After ten months in Hong Kong, I came back to Brazil to see my family but the fear and insecurity to live there was around yet. I was praying for something good happen and I received another invite to work in Hong Kong in the same park. After, I came to Los Angeles to started a new journey in my life. It’s been complicated because the Quarantine, but I’m sure that I’m gonna live here as an artist and I’ll figure out my situation and soon I’m gonna be able to create my projects, visions and be able to open more space for LGBT community.

Has it been a smooth road?
My professional path has always been difficult. Prejudice for being gay, Financial difficulty, professional devaluation but I’ve always been persistent(looking ahead and not for the problem in the moment), creative(using my power and leadership to bring my visions and connecting talents), good spirit/faith (to bring people with the same energy or be influenced by that) and looking to grow more in everything that I’m doing. And that what was helped me to keep my way.

Unfortunately, I don’t have permission to work, so I haven’t been able to work since I moved here. But I’m being productive creating dance videos, recording and editing for projects by other artists, taking dance classes, doing challenges, looking for auditions. Missy Elliot commented and shared my CoolOffChallenge video and I got 100.000 views in 6 days on “MyPowerChallenge” Beyoncé song on Tik Tok and the official choreographers (Ebony Williams and Kany Diabaté) shared and commented on the video too.

I’m trying every day to find a way to fix my situation, and my friends here are supporting me with a place to live. Their support is very important because it encourages me NOT to give up, however difficult it may seem. This makes me feel so motived and confident because they believe in me and my dreams as I do. My financial condition it’s not good now and for fixed this, I decided to create a campaign on GoFundMe to help me pay a lawyer for my Asylum Visa as soon as possible and also for rent and food for the next four months.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
My business it’s myself. I’m dancer, choreographer, teacher, video maker, director for must of my projects… As a dancer and choreographer, I’m a hardworking and versatile dancer but specialize on Hip Hop and Jazz Funk and I love to study and take class Afro, Vogue, Waacking and passinho. As a video maker, I’m able to recording, editing, and directing dance videos and Editing and recording music videos.

Peoples know me through the music videos and my dance videos on YouTube. They love how my energy is on fire when I’m in action in front of the camera and how I’m professional and I have a good vibe when I work with others. Behind the camera, They know me by my video editing and video direction. The thing that I’m proud of me is what I did in my career even with a hard path, but I never give up.

What sets me apart from others is the fact I must never allow yourself to be trapped into any single system or mode of thinking but I know listen and grow with each process. To be professional is very important but the qualities like Humility, Positivity, Respect, Love and Support its part of this set for me. I like to compare myself as a Bee. The bees have their hives but they fly to many directions and always come back with the pollen and shared where that Pollen came from to the others to create the honey in their community. I’m here to redefine the meaning of the word community, reminding new vision where neither the group goal nor the individual’s creativity is compromised. My life is connected to the feeling that anything is possible at any moment when you work hard and one day, I will work with the Artists that inspire me. I dream and make my dreams came true!

I created a collective Hive with the idea to connected most black LGBT+ artists to produce great content like Dance Videos, Creative Photoshoot, Documentary, Fashion Video… This collective it’s in the beginning and I want this Hive with many Bees around making a big BUZZZZ… The artist that feel this vibe and wanna be with us, supporting each other, let me know!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, Los Angeles is the best place to be and live as an Artist. Here, we have so much talents and opportunity. With my business in the future, I wanna make projects that can make a difference in the world and inspires. If someone are just starting out he should first have focus in what they want, study and be yourself in the best version everyday. Show you with passion, be independent, do for yourself and for the other with no expectation, work hard even if this project it’s not big how you expected, if you have this way of think, you will go far.
