Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorriane Anderson
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I kind of fell into the world of spirituality. One day on the way to work, I saw a copy of the Secret that my mother had given me years before which I never really read. For some reason, I felt compelled to take it to work with me to read on my lunch break so I grab it. I started it that afternoon and finished it that night. At the time, I was working for a tech incubator in Santa Monica as an operations and logistics manager for a fashion startup. About two weeks later, the company I worked for shut down suddenly and we were all laid off. I had been into herbalism and aromatherapy for several years as a personal hobby and wanted to pursue it more without having to start at the bottom and give up years of work experience. So I decided I was going to give manifestation a try. I decided I would manifest a job that combined my work experience and my love of working with herbs and oils. A few months later, I had done exactly that. I answered a super vague job listing that had nothing to do with desired career paths but I felt like the job was mine so I wrote a long letter, describing my background and love of herbs hoping that somehow that made a difference. I got an email almost right away asking to meet for an interview. I met the owner of the company who said she needed someone exactly like me, someone who had operations experience and had a working knowledge of herbs and other natural materials to help her business from up north to down in Torrance, CA. She said she left the listing vague on purpose, trusting that whoever was meant to find it would and then she offered me the job on the spot. She then explained that this was a spiritual business and I would need to comfortable with all kinds of spiritual things from the metaphysical to witchcraft. I was apprehensive at first but accepted and become the top executive of the company (this is a multi-million dollar brand), behind her and her husband. From there, I learned how to read tarot and oracle cards and how to build and expand a spiritual based business. Eventually I went on to start my own brand which would rebrand into Spirit Element and to drive traffic, I started doing free tarot readings every Sunday on Instagram. About a year later, I decided I wanted to make an oracle deck and reached out to a publisher who had sent me free tarot cards for publicity and offered my deck to them. They accepted and now here I am about six years later with nine international best-selling oracle decks and books under my belt. All of this because I randomly picked up an old copy of the secret.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. There are so many challenges I’ve had to face and it’s never what you expect it to be. Like you expect to work long hours as an entrepreneur or have to deal with paperwork but its the self-doubt, the self-criticism and needing to keep yourself motivated all the time that I find to be the hardest. It’s really just you, being responsible for everything and every single decision matters. Every choice can be the one that breaks your business or pushes you too far. There are so many times I’ve sat on the floor and cried because the stress got to me or I thought I made a mistake I couldn’t come back from. I’ve really had to learn to develop mental strength and more importantly, to trust myself. I had to learn how to validate myself and how to keep myself encouraged when frankly I wanted to give up.Because I don’t get to yell at a boss when things get hard. I am the boss so the only one to blame is me. I have quit my career sooooo many times in a moment of stress. I get over it of course but I have to really sit myself down and remember that I love what I do and I’m good at it and that I keep showing up on the hard days because I really do love my job.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a spiritual author and tarot expert. I am most known for my internationally bestselling oracle decks called the Seasons of the Witch oracles. It’s a revolutionary series because at the time of its inception, there had not been an oracle deck series, at least not that I know of. Its based on something called the Wheel of the Year which is essentially 8 pagan holidays that correspond to the seasons. Each deck in the series represents one of these days so you have a collection of decks that you can switch out during the whole year. I also write spiritual and ritual based apothecary books which are also best-sellers but I’m most proud of the oracle decks. There is such a huge community around these decks and they’ve been translated into so many languages. People all over the world reach out to me, letting me know how much my decks have helped them through hard times or to see themselves as valuable or they read my words and felt like I was speaking directly to them. People dream about being able to change the lives of others and I can honestly say that I get to do that every single day and it’s something I am so grateful for and will always cherish. I think what sets me apart from others is my ability to connect the dots between things that seem unrelated. I got the idea to do a series from reading paranormal romance book series which sometimes have 30 or more books and I thought, why can’t oracles be like this too? I often look at pictures of birds or garden tools or home decor as inspiration for my tarot photos. I like to be inspired and I love to find similarities between things. I think that gives me a unique perspective. It certainly expands my mind and all of that I put into my work.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I would say don’t put too much pressure on yourself when you’re starting out. It always feels like time is running out or this is your last chance but it isn’t. Trust me, I have cleared the deck and started over so many times. The only way you’re going to learn is to try things, fail at it and then try again. There really is no other way. I also wish I had more realistic expectations at the beginning. I was always chasing that viral moment or perfect interview that would flood my business with orders overnight. That’s rare in general, even with how fast tech moves now but it’s super rare at the beginning. Those viral moments happen because you put in the time and made the mistakes. I wish I had spent more time and learning and growing instead of looking for the pot of gold the end of the rainbow. Small steps every day are going to get you miles ahead then waiting for that one perfect viral moment.
