Meet Lorin Baker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorin Baker.

Hi Lorin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have always been intrigued with photography; my mom gave me my very first “lens” – a macro phone attachment – in high school. As soon as I began playing around with it, I was in awe of the way pictures gave you a different perspective on everyday items and how it brought out the beauty and details of even a simple flower. From then on, it sort of became a hobby and I continued playing around with my mom’s camera and took artsy photos of whatever I could get my hands on. After high school, I started taking photography more seriously and began taking on some side gigs – family photos, newborn sessions and second shooting for weddings here and there. A few years later, I got married to my high school sweetheart who was getting more involved with videography and audio engineering. So naturally, we crossed into each other’s passions and became a husband/ wife duo in both photography and videography. Not long after, my husband’s studies moved us across the world away from everything we had ever known – to China. Life had brought us a new adventure and challenge to face. Yes, it was hard, but I don’t regret it and wouldn’t trade it for anything. Going through this experience made me who I am today, and it was during this time that I realized the importance of photography and capturing life’s special moments that you never get back. Now as a photographer and videographer, I look to capture important memories both creatively and candidly so that when my clients look back at my work, all the emotions come rushing back as if they were experiencing them for the first time.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest struggle I’ve faced with photography is knowing that the industry has become so saturated. I’ve always been super critical with myself, and the competition brings that out even more. Too often in the past, it’s crossed my mind “Am I good enough to make it?” or “Are my photos pretty enough?” However, I’ve learned that it’s important to stay true to my style; it’s ok to do things my way, especially because if I don’t, I won’t find as much joy in it. Everyone has different tastes and the right clients will choose me for me.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a photographer and videographer specializing in weddings, family, and newborn sessions. My favorite things to capture are all in the details. I love being creative and finding different angles and close-ups that you don’t typically see. One thing that sets me apart is I make sure to capture candids. I strongly believe that raw emotion is the most important part of a session, and it’s those types of shots that will bring memories flooding back when clients look back on their photos/videos. It’s my creative eye and empathy that set me apart from other photographers – I feel that every detail plays an important role in the session, and I’ll find a beautiful way to capture each and every one.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
It’s important to be flexible. Sometimes you can’t control external factors that will impact your shot, day or life. It’s important to prepare as much as you can and be flexible and compassionate when plans change.
