Meet Lisa Curiel Parker of Humboldt Farms in Mar Vista

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Curiel Parker.

Lisa loves everything creative from photography to audio editing to graphic design but cannabis was one of the last things she anticipated working with. Her past experience includes working with clients such as Diageo, Bentley, Saban, Univision, and Telemundo. She is a native Angelino who received her Bachelor’s in Communication and Master’s in Strategic Public Relations, both from USC Annenberg where she wrote her master’s thesis on the ethics of cannabis marketing.

During graduate school, her further interest in cannabis grew with a fascination of law, botany, business and criminality. As an advocate, she understands that cannabis is here to stay. Like any other human being, she has suffered from a few traumas that led to some minor health issues. At the age of thirteen, she was prescribed steroids, antidepressants and sleeping pills from a neurologist. It took about six months to realize that this was unacceptable; that an adolescent was supposed to be dependent on such medication prescribed by a medical professional was absurd. She never suffered from addiction or substance abuse but this is where her concern with the pharmaceutical industry began. Substance dependency is prevalent in the United States and in the world. Understanding addiction is important to the United States’ so-called “War on Drugs” being waged on individuals like herself who have experienced trauma and use different outlets to escape. Cigarettes, alcohol and fast food are all examples of other addictive substances, yet they are as legal as they are lethal. No “War on Alcohol” or “War on Cigarettes” currently exists in the United States and will most likely never be seen again. No matter what laws are created and put into place, individuals will still grow, distribute, manufacture, sell and consume cannabis for the pursuit of profit, health and happiness.

Has it been a smooth road?
Cannabis is still a federally illegal substance and creates many Catch-22’s in our business. Many consumers seek research in justifying their consumption of cannabis goods but with federal illegality, it’s hard to conduct studies. Red tape exists all over the place making it difficult to push the industry forward.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Being a native Angelino, I love almost everything about it. There are pockets of the city yet to explore or new creations happening all the time.

That being said, Los Angeles can get a bad wrap at the same time with shallowness and flakiness. Native Angelinos aren’t like this at all.
