Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Sochar.
Lindsay, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was raised in Los Angles by two artists. I grew up with endless art supplies at my fingertips, and although both of my parents work primarily in clay, I slowly gravitated towards paint. I have kept a studio with an easel at the ready for over a decade.
I found myself gravitating towards typography and starting painting signs for fun as well as commercial work. A chance meeting with Doc Guthrie, a letterhead and sign painter in 2013 inspired me to refine and perfect my hand-lettering skills at Los Angeles Trade Technical College.
Learning the traditions of the trade and really learning how to control a brush and be patient. Sign painting is a lost art that is resurfacing with the interest oh high-quality handmade goods. I’m happy to bring these old traditions of the craft into my work today.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The sign painter community is very much a man’s world. People expect that it will be a man showing to set up the scaffolding and paint all day, and sometimes are surprised when it’s a young blonde woman!
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
My artwork is bright and whimsical in nature, often with a retro twist thanks to my love of vintage advertising. I love painting vintage fruit labels, as well as wedding signs, things that make people smile when they see it.
The wedding signs are always a pleasure to create for a couple. It’s something custom that they will keep forever and lots of fun for me to paint. The more color, or flowers the better!
I also enjoy creating wood signs that look like they were found in your grandmother’s attic or grandfathers garage. Vintage seed packets or matchstick advertisements that have been aged to perfection!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
As well as being a sign painter, I am part of the Creative team at Crafted at the Port of Los Angeles. Crafted and the artists in the market have become such a great supportive network for me and my business.
Having the close proximity to other painters and makers has given me such a sense of community. We all learn from one another and work together on projects and custom work! I have a shop in the market alongside many other creative minds!
