Hi Lindsay, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Lindsay Olson, and I founded Lulu Designs. I have over 20 years of experience in high-end luxury interior design. My journey began with a dual passion for business and creativity. I first earned a business degree and worked in real estate, but I soon realized my true calling was in creative expression. This led me to pursue a second degree in interior design, allowing me to blend my business acumen with my artistic talents.
The name “Lulu Designs” originates from my childhood nickname, “Lulu,” which reflects my personal approach and the intimate connections I form with my clients. Starting in 2002, I built my boutique studio here in Southern California, specializing in residential projects from concept to completion, including ground-up design and extensive renovations. My work is rooted in developing authentic connections, listening deeply to clients, and creating interiors that truly resonate with their dreams and personalities.
Lulu Designs has been featured in publications such as Architectural Digest, Elle Décor, House Beautiful, Homes & Gardens, HGTV, and Living Etc., and I’ve completed projects throughout Orange County and beyond.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Honestly, it hasn’t been a smooth road all the way! I’ve certainly faced my share of challenges. For starters, making the leap from real estate into marketing and then finally into interior design was a journey in itself. Plus, running my own business means constantly balancing the creative side with all the practicalities, like making sure I’m always delivering top-notch care to my clients.
Then there are the projects themselves. Construction can throw some real curveballs, and there are times I’ve had to really work to help clients get past that overwhelmed feeling during remodels and feel empowered instead. And, of course, managing expectations and keeping up with the ever-evolving trends in design, while still ensuring every project feels truly unique and works perfectly for the client, is always a balancing act.
But even with all those hurdles, my core philosophy of “leaving it better than you found it” and genuinely listening to what my clients want has been key to my success.

With over two decades of experience, my passion for design has taken a remarkable journey, evolving from my early work in real estate to a deep dive into furniture design, ultimately culminating in the establishment of Lulu Designs. This background allows me to approach each project with a unique blend of business acumen and artistic sensibility. My true gift lies in my innate ability to connect with clients on a profound level, understanding their deepest desires and translating their dreams and personalities into breathtakingly beautiful and highly functional spaces. I don’t just design rooms; I craft homes that authentically resonate with my clients’ true essence, creating environments that are both luxurious and deeply personal.

Luck has played a nuanced role in my journey. Good fortune came in the form of supportive friends and family, timely opportunities, and the right clients finding me at pivotal moments. Recognition from the design industry and successful collaborations also provided boosts at critical points. However, my story is equally shaped by my willingness to embrace challenges, learn from setbacks, and continually refine my craft and business approach.
