Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Munns.
Lisa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always had a niche for artistry and makeup. When I was finishing my Bachelors of Science, it dawned on me and I thought to myself “maybe I chose the wrong major.”
I decided to take a makeup certification courses and was noted as a “natural beauty artist” by my instructor and peers.
Since then, I’ve worked with INGLOT cosmetics, Make Up For Ever and Bobbi Brown cosmetics. Getting the opportunity to further educate myself and master makeup artistry. For the past 2 years, I have dedicated myself to becoming an entrepreneur. I’ve had the opportunity to work with well-known and published photographers, a variety talents, day to day people and celebrities.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, only smooth experiences. There were and still times when weeks or months can be slow. When you hit a slow season or month it can really put a toll on your finances. The challenges of the industry drive me to become better. With struggle, there can be great success.
Any predictions for the industry over the next few years?
Makeup is comparable to Fashion. Trends will always come and go. Styles and techniques will be revamped, recycled and reused in different methods/applications. With consumers being more health conscious and aware of what they’re putting on their skin, most cosmetics brands have become organic, vegan, free of harmful chemicals and catering to those consumers. With makeup and beauty, I’ve noticed the “less is more” trend. Most recently for the VMAs, Alica Keys appeared on the red carpet makeup free, “I don’t want to hide anything anymore.” Giving women around the world the freedom to be naturally beautiful.
Has there been a particular challenge that you’ve faced over the years?
Oh geesh, my biggest challenge over the past years has been to never give up. The makeup industry is a beast in its own, just like any other industry. You can break it and make it or you can let it break you. Being an entrepreneur, I’ve learned to keep positive, network and keep pushing forward. “If it was easy everyone would be doing it.”
Let’s change gears – is there any advice you’d like to give?
My advice would be, don’t get discouraged. Take the good with the bad. Take criticism as constructive and learn from every job/gig. Network in all different avenues, from social/industry gatherings, Internet (google is your friend), and job sites that were created for our industry. Be productive and take action. Take every job that interest you, rather if it’s paid or trade, you never know what opportunities can open up. Always “stay positive and trust your journey.”
