Today we’d like to introduce you to Krystal Castillo.
Hi Krystal, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hello, I’m Krystal Merily Castillo. I am a Dominican American born and raised in Miami Florida. I started dancing when my parents put me in ballet class at three years old. It wasn’t until I was about eight years old that I actually began to flourish in my creative performance. I began to take jazz and musical theatre classes which led me to grow and start to love performing of any kind. It was during middle and high school that I knew I wanted to pursue dance and the performing arts as a career. I took every chance I got to dance and sing. At 17 years old, I moved to New York to study at AMDA Conservatory and fine-tune my classic techniques like ballet and broadway jazz. Two years later, I flew across the country to LA to study more commercial styles such as hip hop, jazz funk, and heels. As I continued to expand my artistry in the performing arts I also realized I like being behind the camera, now film and editing are also a passion of mine. I have had a lot of people help me along the way to where I am now such as my parents and mentors who continue to inspire me like Tawanna Hall, Valia Gonzalez, Stephanie Landwehr, Jessica Franco and Cain Devore.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Oh of course not. If it weren’t for my support system, I wouldn’t be where I am today. During High School, I definitely felt like I would never amount to anything. It was so odd feeling so confident in myself yet so insecure. People’s words hurt. No matter how hard I try to appear like this relentless and fearless person, sometimes I crumble. I was told I was not good enough countless amount of times. I was told that unless I lose weight, I would never be wanted. Stuff that as a young person made me want to quit. But I didn’t, I am exactly where I said I was going to be, doing the things I love.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Performing Artist. I dance, sing, act, film and produce. I specialize in Jazz, Jazz Funk and Hip Hop dance. I am also theatrically trained in acting and singing. I am known for my explosive hard-hitting dynamics and versatility in my movement. As well as my vibrant and striking performances. I think what sets me apart from others is the fact that I have no barriers. I am a commercial dancer that you may see in R&B and Rap music videos and then you may also see me on a stage singing a broadway classic. I follow my heart no matter what and do not care how I am perceived. I have learned that as long as you have a humble heart, are willing to learn and stay true to yourself, you can accomplish everything you desire.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I think most people know me mostly for my performances and how I dance. I also love to produce, make and edit films. It has become one of my favorite things to do. There is something about putting together something on film that speaks on a more emotional cataclysmic level than what’s seen on stage.
