Today we’d like to introduce you to Kexin Cai.
Kexin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I graduated from New York Film Academy. Since I was young, I love watching musicals, and I love visual and athletic things. I had a BFA degree of Broadcasting&Host in Shanghai Normal University, I used to be a Host in Shanghai. It’s a good career for a girl, but I don’t feel my enthusiasm. So I decided to start learning Filmmaking and get my Master’s Degree in LA.
In 2019, I shot a romantic comedy called “The Letter”. The images in this film are a tribute to my favorite film director Wes Anderson. After I graduated from film school, I became a Production Designer and Wardrobe on set, I gave all my passion for every scene I created. Making a 3D world to 2D “picture” is the most interesting thing in my world. In my spare time, I’m still writing scripts, all the experiences on set are also the experiences of my life, so I want to spend my whole life making a film that deserves to be remembered.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There will never be a smooth road when you really want to achieve your dream. Before I started to learn film, I was a hoster in Shanghai. I have a decent and easy work in TV Station. But after I came here everything just changes, I can’t adapt myself to overwork, and you have to very pay attention when you set. Everything is brand new for me, so I have to start from the beginning. After I graduated from school, I come to the real world, everything becomes crueler, you have to communicate with people who are difficult to communicate with, and sometimes you have to complete a seemingly impossible task in a very short time.
I shared an ins story last year, it says: I asked my favorite instructor why we choose filmmaking? Like McDonald’s drive-thru every day, no time to hang out with friends or just chill at home, everything is totally different from what we imagine before in the real world. He said, “you choose your dream, then you have to pay for it.” Well… McDonald’s is fine I mean. 2020 is a really tough year for filmmakers, all the projects have to stop because of the pandemic, a lot of filmmakers have to face the chose “go back” or “stay”. But I believe everything will be normal. Because we’re in Hollywood.
Please tell us about ChineseinLA.
I am a news reporter in a Chinese TV station now, and also I work for the film set as Wardrobe and Production Designer. I think because of my cheerful personality and serious working attitude that make directors and producers choose me.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory is every time I go to the cinema with my parents, I watched Moulin Rouge when I was a child after I grew up, I use MP4 watched that movie hundreds of times, since that time, my dream is to become a director, shooting a real musical one day.
