Meet Katonya Breaux of Unsun Cosmetics in Calabasas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katonya Breaux.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In my early thirties, I started getting these little black moles on my face. Mind you, it was no surprise because all of the older women in my family have them. I was shocked when the dermatologist told me that the moles were not genetic, but the direct result of sun damage. Imagine my shock! I grew up believing that black people did not need sun protection. Like many in my community, I believed that my melanin would protect me. I went on a search for the perfect sunscreen for my skin but did not find one… I wanted options that were free of chemical actives and that considered my skin tone in the process of manufacturing.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been smooth, ha! While it has also not been terribly turbulent, starting a new business is rarely, if ever, easy. And I choose an industry with strict FDA regulations. So there were struggles mostly due to my learning curve, testing delays, etc.

Please tell us about Unsun Cosmetics.
Unsun provides clean sun protection for all skin tones without the white residue and is reef safe and cruelty-free. It’s an incredibly clean formulation that fills a huge gap in the market of  sun protection for women of color that needs something safe for them as well as the planet. Unsun is an inclusive brand that hopes to set a new standard of thinking of all skin tones in its efforts to protect one’s skin from the ravages of the sun!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Hmmm, great question. I, for sure would’ve launched with more skus. Other than that, I don’t think I would’ve done much differently.

Hire a suncare consultant immediately when I decided this was the path I would take, it would’ve saved months of headaches and thousands of dollars!
