Meet Kate Mollison of On Tuesdays We Wear Black

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Mollison

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was widowed about 4 years ago. It was medical negligence so we were completely blindsided. Craig died 2 days before Thanksgiving, the day before his birthday, and during the peak of COVID-19… it was like being waterboarded with gasoline. My kids were young, my daughter was under 2 years old and we suddenly found ourselves squatting in our own home because of all the red tape that currently exists in the bereavement process.

I spent 2 and a half years digging my way out of a situation I should have never had to be in and I realized along the way that this was far more complicated than it needed to be, so I created a business to help alleviate the pain points of bereavement. This creates a clearer path through grief, prioritizing holistic overall well-being, and that helps connect the “what” to the “why”. I create an understanding of the grief and normalize the experience. This puts the control to “get better” back into your own hands

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh, there have been many struggles. From financial barriers to my children being bullied for not having a dad, this road is not for the faint of heart. Initially, I struggled because there was a delay in benefit payout and Craig had no will. I literally had to Go-Fund-Me his funeral. Then I struggled with my own grief and mental health. Due to bereavement leave laws, I went back to work very shortly after his death. I ended up having a severe mental breakdown as I was trying to juggle working full-time, being a full-time mom, and managing all the complexities of the aftermath of the death.
Even now, 4 years later, I still find there are things I struggle with. but the key is to just keep moving.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
On Tuesdays We Wear Black LLC was inspired by my late husband and his love of Broadway. “Mean Girls” was one of his favorite musicals! So much so, that he’d wear a pink tie to work on Wednesdays! (“On Wednesdays we wear pink…”) Craig passed away on a Tuesday, so on Tuesdays, we wear black.

I took my tragedy and my experiences and was inspired by Craig’s zest for life and created a business that helps support the healthy return of its staff after bereavement leave. I offer workplace training for management to help employers better connect with their grieving employees in a way that fosters understanding, inclusion, and education. The goal is to retain the workforce and create modern guidelines for businesses and organizations to better move forward with empathy.

I help coach individuals through the grief experience and provide resource coordination for bereavement support.

Most recently I gave a TEDx talk that discusses the connection between grief and bereavement and how understanding both creates better business metrics.

you can read more about my personal experience and learn about the business by visiting my website! I can work anywhere in the world, so geographical location doesn’t matter

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’m a firm believer that you make your own luck. By that, I mean that not much in this world is given to you, you’ve got to go get it, and typically, you get out what you put in. So have I been fortunate? absolutely. but lucky? no.
