Meet Kat Guevara

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Guevara.

Kat, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a Los Angeles based freelance makeup artist specializing in beauty, bridal, fashion, TV/Film and print. I’ve been a pro-makeup artist for ten years. My love for art began at an early age, and I’ve been fortunate to have been surrounded by color all my life. I grew up with performers involved in arts and I was hooked. Everything creative and colorful fascinated me.

It ignited my creativity and allowed me to explore my artistic mentality with an open mind. In 2012 my passion blossomed into a career. I had the skill, I just needed the world to see it. I took my talent of drawing and painting and brought my artwork to life through makeup artistry at MAC Cosmetics in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The gods must’ve been rooting for me because about two years later, I was transferred to continue my career at MAC Beverly Hills, California; I’ve meet some interesting people from all walks of life and the faces of some of the world’s most high profile women. That REALLY took my career to next level. I decided to take a leap of faith and transformed my love for cosmetics into a business and become my own boss today. With time, my work has been featured on Us Weekly Magazine and E!News as well as multiple other popular hollywood media pages. Today, I continue to create countless beauty looks for my clients and travel the world with them. I am beyond fortunate to share my knowledge of what I love and make people feel even more confident and beautiful.

Has it been a smooth road?
If you’re unfamiliar with how the beauty industry works, long story short, many of being a freelancer in the beauty industry dream a glamorous career, traveling the world with celebrities, but let’s get real for a moment. Freelancing means doing business, and doing business can be tough. Sure, being a freelancer can be rewarding and versatile career. You’re your own boss, you get to decide when and how much you work, you set your own rates and you get to choose your clients but you’re also the sole bearer of all the struggles that come along with the job. Probably the scariest part of being a freelancer is the uncertainty that comes with the job. It’ll take a while for you to build a solid client base and get your name out there. There’s no guaranteed work or paycheck, and you work long and often weird hours. Plus you’ve got to deal with business seasonality. The financial and mental stress will make you feel discouraged at times, maybe even to the point where you want to give up. But persistence is key, and freelancers who push through will make their way to success.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?

I use color theory and other advanced techniques in order to give each person the look that fits them the best. I treat makeup as an art form that has endless boundaries for creation. Like a portrait, my work is a true reflection of my client’s aspects of their personality. Right now I am currently traveling with my clients and also will be working on shows that I will mention later.
