Meet Karine Hsu of Slope

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karine Hsu.

Hi Karine, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My background isn’t traditionally rooted in design. Growing up in Palo Alto, I was obsessed with how technology could change people’s lives. Seeing companies like Facebook and Apple around me, I knew early on that I wanted to be a founder. It was inspiring. So I studied Statistics and Computer Science in college, while also nurturing my curiosity about psychology and why people behave the way they do.

I love building companies – in fact, I started two startups in college, but my first venture-backed startup went through Y-Combinator, where I co-founded an e-commerce company in the fashion space with my now Slope co-founder. That’s where I self-taught myself marketing – everything from brand building, performance marketing, to design. It clicked for me that you could combine rigorous analytics with creative to build something really impactful. After we sold the company, I realized I loved building brands and wanted to help startups with marketing and design, which led me to the agency side.

Together, we developed a unique creative process that combines our expertise in building and scaling our own companies, marketing, and design. Our agency, Slope, partners with companies pre-launch to growth stages across industries like AI, fintech, web3/crypto, gaming, healthcare, and climate – helping them build brands and digital experiences that define their categories. For me, design became a way to channel my love for technology, and my drive to solve meaningful problems with creative.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting and running a company is never a straightforward path – there are constant ups and downs. One of our biggest challenges is navigating the fact that most startup founders have never worked with an agency before. They often come to us thinking they need a logo or a website, when what they really need is strategic positioning and a brand that can scale with them. Early on, we’d get requests for “cheap and fast” execution, but we realized that approach rarely served our clients well in the long run.

Learning to position ourselves as strategic partners rather than just execution vendors was crucial. We had to educate clients on why investing in foundational brand work upfront would save them time and money down the road. It meant sometimes turning down projects that weren’t the right fit, or having honest conversations about scope and timeline when founders wanted everything done yesterday. But once clients understood our approach, that we’re former founders who’ve been in their shoes, the relationships deepened. They started coming to us earlier in their journey, involving us in bigger strategic decisions, and seeing us as an extension of their team rather than just a vendor.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Slope is an end to end creative agency working with technology companies across industries like AI, Web3, gaming, fintech, healthcare, and hardware – helping them build brands and digital experiences that define their categories.

Some notable clients include Decagon, Story Protocol, Pylon, Ramp, and more – helping with everything from designing brand, digital, and product experiences.

Our Services –

Brand: Brand Strategy + Positioning, Brand Visual Identity, Collateral

Digital: Website Design, Website Development, UI/UX

Marketing: Paid Media, Campaign Work, Ad Creatives

Any big plans?
So many things! We’re doubling down on the intersection of brand and product. More of our work now involves helping companies ensure their brand translates seamlessly into their product experience, and vice versa. It’s not enough to have a beautiful marketing site if your product feels disconnected from what you promised.
AI is also obviously incredibly exciting to us right now. We’re at this moment where entirely new interfaces are being defined, and we get to help shape what that looks and feels like. We’re integrating AI into our own design processes, but also working together with companies to reimagine human-computer interaction (beyond just the chat bar).
We’re also working with more companies in robotics, physical hardware, energy, and defense tech – sectors that are being transformed and accelerated by AI and need thoughtful design to communicate complex innovation in accessible ways.
