Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Diaz.
Hi Karen, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m a refugee from El Salvador and the first in my family to graduate from high school, college, and business school. I grew up in circumstances where access was limited and safety wasn’t guaranteed, and my family immigrated to the United States with very little beyond resilience and hope. We weren’t supposed to make it, but we did.
Growing up without access taught me something early on: talent isn’t always the issue — proximity and relationships are. I saw how talented, driven people often struggled not because they lacked ability, but because they were building alone. Over time, I came to understand that success doesn’t grow in isolation. It grows through trust, shared purpose, and community.
Education became my bridge forward. I earned my MBA from UCLA and built my career working with organizations like IBM, Google, Amazon, and Gartner. Through my work in business development and strategic partnerships, I supported relationships with C-suite leaders representing 87% of the Fortune 500 and helped drive over $111 million in revenue. That gave me a clear view of how opportunity actually moves — through positioning, relationships, and strategic alignment.
That insight led me to create Lightmakers. I didn’t start it with a fixed blueprint, but with a simple belief: light travels farther when it’s shared. Today, Lightmakers is built around helping founders and creators turn visibility into income, impact, and long-term opportunity.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. The struggle was real, and there were long stretches where I was carrying experiences that almost no one around me could see or fully understand.
I came to this country as a refugee, without a safety net, without access, and without anyone explaining how these systems worked. I was learning how to navigate a new world while still holding the reality of where I came from.
I remember walking down a street in El Salvador and seeing a body on the ground. Life continued around it. That moment stayed with me. It showed me how fragile stability can be and how quickly order can disappear.
When you’ve seen that, you don’t take opportunity lightly. You don’t confuse comfort with security. Because of my background, I don’t romanticize success. I build with urgency, responsibility, and care. I understand what instability looks like, so I’m intentional about creating stability — for myself, for my family, and for the people I serve.
There was no blueprint for what I was building. I had to learn how to trust my judgment, make decisions without external validation, and move forward even when outcomes weren’t guaranteed. Those experiences didn’t just shape my resilience — they shaped how I lead, how I assess risk, and why I take responsibility seriously.
As you know, we’re big fans of Lightmakers. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Lightmakers is a modern marketing and community platform built for founders, creators, and experts who want to turn their ideas into income and measurable impact.
We specialize in building consistent revenue through content, partnerships, and strategic visibility. Through our courses, live experiences, and curated collaborations, we help entrepreneurs attract aligned clients, brand deals, and long-term opportunities without relying on short-term tactics or chasing trends.
Before founding Lightmakers, I spent over 15 years in business development and strategic partnerships, working with organizations like IBM, Google, Amazon, and Gartner. I’ve helped drive over $111 million in revenue and supported executive relationships representing 87% of the Fortune 500. That experience gave me a clear understanding of how opportunity actually moves. It moves through positioning, proximity, and trust.
What sets Lightmakers apart is that we don’t just “market” businesses. We engineer momentum. If most firms hand you a microphone, we design the stage, fill the room, and build the amplification strategy around it.
For example, at our recent private screening for Paris Hilton’s Infinite Icon, we generated over 600 RSVPs, curated 100+ in-room attendees, and brought together creators with a combined reach exceeding 40 million. That kind of reach wasn’t accidental. It was the result of strategic curation, brand alignment, and intentional community design.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that Lightmakers blends strategy with expansion. Yes, we help people increase visibility and revenue. But the deeper mission is access. When someone grows their income and influence, they expand their ability to create jobs, fund ideas, and uplift others.
Because of my background as a refugee and first-generation founder, access isn’t abstract to me. It’s personal. We are building the Lightmakers Access Initiative — a structured scholarship and subsidized access tier for early-stage founders who qualify through need-based criteria, including EBT participation, first-generation entrepreneurship, and immigrant backgrounds. A portion of Lightmakers revenue is reinvested into expanding opportunity for those building without traditional networks or capital.
At its core, Lightmakers is about ignition. We help people turn their ideas into something powerful enough to illuminate entire rooms — and we make sure more people have access to the match.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I grew up in Los Angeles, and at this point in my life, I can confidently say I don’t ever want to leave. I love LA through and through. Not to knock other cities; there are incredible places everywhere. I just love it here.
I love the sunshine. I love the melting pot. I love that you can be surrounded by creatives, founders, artists, executives, wellness entrepreneurs, and filmmakers all in the same week. I love that you can drive an hour and be in the mountains, or head the other direction and be at the beach. In theory, you could go snowboarding and surfing on the same day. I haven’t done it yet, but I’m absolutely down.
What I think people sometimes misunderstand about LA is the pace. I actually find it slower than people assume. There’s ambition, yes. People are building big things. But there’s also space. People prioritize sunshine, long dinners, wellness, and community. It’s possible to work hard here and still have a life.
Being from here, I’ve also been fortunate to maintain friendships that have lasted my entire life. That’s the LA I know. It’s layered, loyal, and grounded.
Like any city, you experience it based on a lot of factors. For me, LA is possibility. It’s creativity, reinvention, access to the world, and home.
