Hi Justinah , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in NYC, Brooklyn to be exact. The culture, environment and grit of growing up in the concrete jungle is what has honed me into a successful business woman today.
Once, in a rap song, Jay-Z affectionately referred to NYC as the concrete jungle and it stuck. In business you need grit and determination. Developing and educating myself from a lifelong learning disorder (dyslexia) to completing my Juris Doctor of Law, while launching my own legal mediation- tax mitigation practice has been a miracle & blessing that only God could dream up!
There’s many parts and moving pieces to a persons story, but what is special about mine is that it’s still being written. Having been held back in school 3 times when I was a young pupil I couldn’t imagine being a lawyer but that was a dream God placed in my heart as young as 13 years old.
The story of The Law Mediator, Corp. & Heisser & McFadden is still being written and unfolding daily. Many fortune 100 companies began with the same grit, back story and determination. I am grateful for where we are but more excited for where the collective voices, education and team vision will take us.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Smooth, is not the word I would use! (Chuckles). Again, it was like piercing through concrete with a feather to make it from poverty to success. To go from darkness to light , it means you first have to acknowledge that there is darkness.
One cannot overcome one matter without knowing there is something to overcome. Everything in life is spiritual, it just shows up and manifests itself physically. So, because it’s physical, we often ignore the spiritual. When I tapped deep into my walk with God, things got smoother on every level of my life.
Conversely, it’s the same in business. You have to look at what is not working and not just ignore the tough places. You also cannot be afraid to make hard decisions and have those tough conversations.
Back to the concrete and grit! You need spirit and truth in business and you cannot successfully have one without the other.
I find businesses that stand the test of time have more than a business name, but actual spirit behind it. You’ll fold pretty quickly if you only have a name and an idea. What’s the spirit behind your brand? Why are you doing what you’re doing? And why can no one else do this or deliver it this way?
The truth is in your message and how you deliver in performance to your clients. The spirit is what will help you stand the test of time.
