Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Garcia.
Jose, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born in Tecate, a small city in the northern border of Mexico. At the young age of 6, I taught myself to play guitar. Mexico has a rich tradition of guitar music and much of my teen years were spent learning the style of the Trios. However, being so close to the USA allowed me to listen to American radio stations where my love for the guitar was nourished with Jazz, Blues, Rock, and even Crooners so my mind and creativity was stretched.
At 21 I finally made the permanent move to Los Angeles but as a first-generation immigrant I was forced to find steady employment in order to survive, music would have to wait. Unfortunately, it took 13 long years before I dove into the music scene where I was lucky to meet well established, world-famous musicians who immediately embraced me and brought me into their music circle.
Around that time I discovered, I could sing, much better than I ever thought I could. That opened many more opportunities for performances. Weekends were always filled with concerts at jazz clubs or performances at private events. I believe that my exposure all those years to American radio stations gave me the vocabulary to navigate the music scene in Los Angeles. Jose Garcia Music was born soon after where I could dedicate my creativity wholly to my craft whether via singing or the Spanish Guitar.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Challenging. One of the biggest challenges for me was technology. Back in the nineties, the internet was a new concept so marketing yourself, learning to make a website, uploading media and all that jazz proved challenging.
Similarly, a recording made the big move from analog to digital and that technology had a very steep learning curve.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Jose Garcia Music – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Jose Garcia Music is a company that provides live music performances. Most of the services revolve around the Spanish Guitar but as a singer, I also perform Rumba Flamenca in the style of the Gypsy Kings. They brought to fame a style of Flamenco music that is more pop-oriented and appeals to the masses worldwide. I perform as a soloist or with a multi-member band which also affords me the ability to perform other styles as well such as Bossa Nova, Salsa, Jazz and even pop music by artists like Sting.
In addition, I have an extensive library of the Great American Song Book which I have grown quite fond of. Having the ability to perform songs that Sinatra, Bennett, Buble and others made famous gives me a valuable edge when performing for crowds whose ages range greatly. I must admit that crooning brings a big smile to my face.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Currently, I have three CD’s on the market. https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/josegarcia13
Pasajes, my latest, is all original material. I am very happy with all three and perhaps my next CD will be all instrumental compositions.
