Meet Jonathan Cohen of Joseph & Sons Mosaic / Tile

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Cohen.

Jonathan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My grandfather migrated to Los Angeles from Argentina in the 1950s/1960s. He was a painter who started making mosaics once he got to America. One day, he saw someone across the street making mosaic and asked if he could help. The guy said yes, and the rest was history. After years of practice, he showed his son, who showed his son (me). I started making mosaics in the backyard of my dad’s house. It started with me for the love of, not just mosaic, but all types of art mediums. I started making mosaics professionally, and the jobs snowballed until I was able to make the jump to full time mosaicist, which has ended up being great. Got the website going, put in a lot of footwork, practiced the art, and explored different jobs/clients mosaics in abstract, realism, and pop art.

Now, we’re beautifying our city and other cities one mosaic at a time.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it was always an uphill battle to get to the point where I could contract with renowned companies such as Marriott, Disney, LAX, and Fat Sal’s. Some of the struggles of growing my company was finding the right people to work with, training them, seeing who sticks around, who really cares for the art, and who’s there for me personally.

As you know, we’re big fans of Joseph & Sons Mosaic / Tile. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I want people to know that with us the highlight is the quality and service. Our clients really get firsthand experience with the artist, myself, and with my original designs. We always give 120% on the quality. We are third generation mosaic artists here in Los Angeles, and very few companies fabricate mosaics on the top-tier level that we do.

I’m really known for my abstract moderns mosaics and also floral and nature designs. I can really make a great design with any concept, no matter the challenge. Over the years, that’s been my talent – overcoming all the challenges in order to succeed.

Not only do we design and fabricate my original mosaics, but we also install the mosaics ourselves onto almost any surface – ceilings, floors, pools, fountains, columns, the list goes on. We even travel for installs and offer special extras like LED inlays.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Yes, absolutely I’m a risk taker. I left my secure job at the time to gamble on my art, which wasn’t really snowballing at the time, but I had so much passion for it. I would risk losing money on the job to stay good with the client, risking myself and my employees, knowing that sometimes my fate and the fate of the business is in our client’s hands.
