Meet Jessica Godinez of Ositos in Whittier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Godinez.

Jessica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Being Mexican, there are so many different parts of my culture that I was exposed to at a young age. Of course, as a child, my favorite thing was the candy. The variety of snacks covered in Chamoy, Chile, Tajin… it’s amazing. Once, during a trip to Tijuana, we visited a market that was filled with candies, that’s where I first saw gummies being made that way. I just thought wow, people back home would love these, so when I came back I decided to try my hand at them. Some batches were too sour, some were too sweet, after a lot of trial and error and some more research, I finally decided on a recipe that I thought was perfect. My first exposure was too friends and family and little by little word of mouth helped to spread the word; Ositios officially launched in April of 2018. Since then it’s been nonstop orders, requests, pop-up events and I love it.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely has not been a smooth ride. It can be a little overwhelming at times, being a fulltime working mom and wife, there’s a lot I do already. But I love what I do, seeing the reaction on people’s faces, from what I made, knowing my work brought those smiles… It makes all of it worth it.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Ositos – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We specialize in chili gummy bears. We use chamoy as our base sauce and then add in our own blend of different chili powders.

What sets us apart is that our recipe is made for all ages, we don’t make our mix too spicy or too sweet. We want everyone to be able to enjoy our Ositos.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are definitely looking forward to someday being able to have our Ositos in different locations such as different markets, restaurants and candy stores.
