Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Corbin.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always been drawn towards increasing my performance. I was in high school. All American cross country runner ran with the Olympic Torch in 1996 and received a scholarship to UCLA. Unfortunately, by the age of 20, I was riddled with injury including chronic sciatica, had given myself an ulcer and was constantly sick. But I had youth on my side and was able to push through the majority of the pain and discomfort. The poor health and physical degradation didn’t stop when I hung up my racing shoes, however.
All of the drive and intensity that benefitted me in athletics I transferred over into my career of being a TV host and producer, but as I aged I no longer had youth to protect me from my work-a-holic tendencies. By the age of 30, I came down with a debilitating case of adrenal fatigue. In effort to heal myself, I immersed myself into the art of recovery that included yoga, breath work, bio-feedback and researched the various ways I could keep myself safe from the various levels of burnout I had experienced for ten+ years.
The problem was that I did not have the right information and tools to keep my body, mind, and spirit in integrity so I could perform at a high level without risking all the fallout. The truth is, my health crisis is shared by the majority of people today. Most people are running at an energetic debt. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Burnout, in all of its forms, is 100% avoidable AND it is reversible.
For this reason, I have dedicated my career to “Curing the Human Energy Crisis” by working with individuals and organizations ready and willing to learn about the art of recovery to unlock sustainable human potential in body, mind, and soul.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For me, there have been consistent challenges the entire way… but that isn’t a bad thing.
Personally, I had a lot of health challenges from an early age. But what I came to learn was the behaviors that created a lot of the health challenges originated in the belief that I had to achieve greatness in order to be worthy of love and respect. Once I learned how to embrace my inherent worth, and not let my worth be dictated by external factors, the places my choices came from inside of myself changed and so did my health for the better. Trying to prove your worth through achievement is not only a trap, it is EXHAUSTING.
I still aspire to do great things, but it is not because I am trying to prove anything. What I do in the world and in my career is motivated by two things: 1. Service 2. Play. If the task at hand doesn’t meet one of the two criteria, I’m out. Professionally, the biggest challenge I have faced is the sheer amount of time and solitude required for me to distill down the art of recovery and how to achieve sustained performance into a message that people can understand and are inspired by.
Not everybody geeks out on this topic like I do. But EVERYONE benefits from what I am teaching, just like any car owner benefits from getting their car serviced. But I want what I am teaching to feel sexier than Joe “the Mechanic” you know? So that is one challenge.
REVITA5 LLC – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My company is called REVITA5. It was founded by myself and my business partner, Kristi Britto. We help organizations increase health + performance and manage stress and attrition related burnout. We do this by providing every single employee with the REVITA5 Tracker that allows them to take a 1-minute Heart Rate Variability (HRV) Assessment every morning so they can determine where they are at on the spectrum of stress.
With that information, the REVITA5 Tracker gives them custom food, fitness and mindfulness advice based on their level of recovery and what would be most helpful for them that day. Then aggregate all of the collective data and reflect back to the leadership of the organization how each department is trending in regards to their level of resilience and recommended actions to increase continued health and performance. We never expose individual data, only how groups are trending over time.
REVITA5 is data-driven + human centered. If your company isn’t using it, you are missing a GIANT opportunity to transform your organization from overwhelmed to optimized. True story.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Securing our first REVITA5 corporate client is up there on the proudest moments list because what we are doing is paradigm shifting and most organizations don’t want to be the first to try a new approach… no matter how solid the technology is. After you get a few clients to come on board, it becomes so much easier to gain credibility and momentum. So getting over that first client hump was GIANT for our growth and morale.
I believe the best is yet to come.
