Meet Jeron Devonte of Koreatown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeron Devonte.

Hi Jeron, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m Jeron Devonte — a vocalist, educator, certified group fitness instructor, and creative entrepreneur originally from Chattanooga, Tennessee. Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, but it started as my safe space before it ever became my career. I grew up in a strict household where expression wasn’t always encouraged, so singing became the way I found myself — and honestly, the way I survived.

I started taking music seriously in high school, and that decision changed everything. I went on to earn my bachelor’s degree in Vocal Music Education from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and later my master’s in Vocal Performance of Sacred Music from the University of Notre Dame. Those years shaped me not only as a performer but as a teacher — they taught me that voice isn’t just sound; it’s identity, healing, and truth.

Over the years, I’ve performed across the U.S. and internationally — from castles and cathedrals in Italy to stages back home — and I’ve worked with incredible artists like Kathleen Battle. But what truly drives me now is helping others find their voices. That’s why I founded Jeron Devonte TVC Vocal Studio (jerondevonte.com) and The B.A.T.T.L.E. Association (the battle association.org), my nonprofit focused on making vocal education accessible to all. I’ve integrated my vocal practices and my fitness instruction where I combine physical training, mindfulness, and singing to strengthen both the body and the voice and I call it Vocal Healing.

Now based in Los Angeles, I’m merging all these parts of my life — performer, coach, and advocate — to empower others to sing freely, live authentically, and use their voices to heal and inspire. My journey hasn’t been easy, but every challenge has led me closer to my purpose: helping people realize that their voice matters — both on and off the stage.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all — but I wouldn’t change a thing. My journey has been anything but linear. Growing up in a strict, religious household as a Black gay man, I often felt unseen and unheard. Music was my way of surviving, of finding a voice in a world that didn’t always give me space to exist fully. That tension — between wanting to belong and needing to be free — shaped so much of who I am today.

I’ve faced bullying, family fractures, mental health struggles like anxiety and PTSD, and even moments where I questioned if my dreams were worth pursuing. There were times I had to rebuild from scratch — financially, emotionally, and spiritually. But every time life tried to silence me, music pulled me back. It reminded me that my voice had value.

The move to Los Angeles was another big leap. Starting over in a new city meant trusting myself completely — no safety nets, no familiar faces. But it’s also been the most empowering chapter of my life. Those struggles taught me resilience, compassion, and the importance of community. And now, I use that same strength to help others find their own voice — because I know what it feels like to lose it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a vocalist, vocal coach, performer, fitness instructor and creative entrepreneur — but more than anything, I’m a healer who uses music as a tool for transformation. My work lives at the intersection of voice, wellness, and empowerment. I’m classically trained in voice and piano with a little over a 4.5-octave range spanning from E2 to C#6, which allows me to move fluidly between genres like classical, R&B, pop, and jazz. That versatility has become a signature part of my teaching and performance style. I specialize in what I call “vocal healing” — a holistic approach that integrates mind work, breath work, body work, and vocal work. It’s about more than just singing the right notes; it’s about reconnecting with your authentic self and freeing the sound that’s been trapped inside you.

I’m most proud of the breakthroughs I witness in my students — when someone who once doubted themselves finally sings with confidence and joy. What sets me apart is that I don’t just train singers; I guide people through self-discovery using their voice as the medium. I merge my classical foundation with contemporary artistry and my background as a fitness instructor to help singers find balance, stamina, and emotional connection in their craft.

At the end of the day, everything I do comes back to one belief: your voice is your power — and my purpose is to help you use it fully, freely, and fearlessly.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Singing the part of Pagliaccio in the opera Pagliacci when I was a senior in high school. It led me to where I am now as an artist.
