Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Rodriguez.
Jenny, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Funny enough I actually started on the radio first! I got my bachelor’s in Communications and broadcasting because when I thought I wanted to pursue being on air or TV. So I started off interning at Power 106 and a year later got hired as their receptionist and was there for seven years!
While I was there I did a bit of everything I had my segment on Power TV called ‘Fashion Fix’ where I had the opportunity to interview artists on their sense of style. Fashion had always been one of my passions to be able to tie that in with music, which was another thing I was passionate about felt great.
One of my best friends Liz Hernandez who was on air with Big Boy then would ask me to help her pick outfits out for her events and she casually mentioned to me how I should get into styling, after that it planted the seed. She later went on to work at E! as well as another best friend of mine Makeup By Liz who then let me know they were looking for an assistant at E! in wardrobe and asked if I was interested so of course I said yes!
I applied then got called for an interview and two weeks later I got the job! I couldn’t believe it I was ecstatic to begin my journey into the world of styling! So from there, the rest is history! I was at E! for five years and it was huge stepping stone in my career allowed me to really grow and blossom.
Now I do freelance styling and work at Entertainment Tonight, everything worked out the way it was meant to be and I feel grateful for that.
Has it been a smooth road?
By no means has it been a smooth road, like every journey we embark on we come across obstacles in the road. I’m a true believer that they come up to teach us to hone in on our strengths and to make us wiser.
Some of the struggles, in the beginning, was just learning how to deal with multiple personalities and to NEVER take things personal because at the end of the day it never has to do with you.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
My business is in the fashion world, I specialize in styling. I’m known for the most part styling host for TV, as well as award shows, beauty campaigns and editorials.
What makes me most proud of my brand is being able to be creative and have an impact on people by making them feel better about themselves through a wardrobe. That has to be one of the most rewarding feelings as a stylist.
I feel like what sets me apart from others is just being adaptable to change, and my work and passion for what I do.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles is for sure a great place for a styling business, there’s always an event, show, or, movie happening that you can work on. For someone starting out in styling, I would recommend L.A. because you can assist so many stylists and learn different work ethics and see what you like and what you don’t like. It’s how I learned I was assisting. 6 stylists at one point and it taught me so much and gave me the backbone I needed to grow in my career.
