Meet Jamal Coleman of Las Vegas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamal Coleman.

Hi Jamal, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My Comedy career started as a Sound person at the Ontario improv. I worked there for two years without thinking about telling a joke. I actually didn’t like comedians. I was very depressed at the time and being around so much Comedy made me feel better. I got booked to do a freestyle rap at my friend’s show at the Ontario Improv. Another one of my friends, who was a comedian, told me I was a hack and a gimmick because I didn’t have any jokes and I was only gonna rap. So I wrote five minutes of jokes out of spite. I went to go rehearse them in front of my friends and they told me I was terrible. I should never do Comedy. I went down to a local bar and tried to get on the open Mike, but the open Mike was actually a show full of headliners. They let me go up at 2:30 AM in the morning in front of them and the Bartender. They gave me a bunch of advice. The next day I had my show. The producer of the show, who was also the host, couldn’t make it and asked me to fill-in. I had to do 15 minutes to open the show. I had five minutes of jokes. I told those in three minutes. I freestyle rapped, and then I did the most awkward crowd work for 12 minutes. I introduced all the comedians after my set. told jokes between the comedians and at the end of the night the club gave me a bunch of money. I paid all the comedians, but had 400 left over. I called my friend, who was producing the show, and I said I have some money for you. He told me to keep it and welcome to Comedy. I was like did I just get paid $400 to talk shit into a microphone for 15 minutes freestyle rap while I was drunk? I’m a full-time Comedian. I moved to Los Angeles and became a regular and all the clubs I ended up being the rap battle champion for Comedy and then I hit the road. I traveled all the way up to West Coast, Nevada, Arizona central California. I stayed in the Pacific Northwest for five years and came to Vegas and now I have a residency and several other accolades.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely was not a smooth road. A couch surfed for 10 years. I’ve slept on buses. I’ve slept in cars. I’ve slept in venues. I’ve slept in shitty motels with a meth pipe under my pillow. I’ve taken so many one-way bus trips and train rides all of the glory of five minutes. I have lost friends. I have lost girlfriends. I have lost jobs. I sacrificed a lot for this life. But now it’s paying off and I needed to do that in order to feel like I deserved it. I donated my car when I started Comedy. I wanted to make this the hardest thing I’ve ever tried to do and if I could overcome it and still want to do it then I knew it was meant for me and I did

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Comedian. I am a positive energy provider. I am a manufacturer of fun. When I started comedy I never thought about being a comedian so I studied. I studied from Buster Keaton to Kevin Hart. I’ve learned everything and I’m still learning. I wanted to be so good and undeniable that I just did every single show and I am most proud of all the shows that I produced I’ve put on shows that were platforms for comedians that are now famous. I’m very proud of my podcast that I came up with called silly ass podcast. It was an idea that I wrote on a napkin. I was able to get it all the way to toad hop network which was owned by Kevin Smith. I stopped doing the podcast and 2015. I produced eight shows a month. I was the rap battle champion for comedians in Los Angeles for like two years. I think I am most known for my tenacious ability to do it myself I produce my own shows. I produce comedy albums I produce specials. I’ve done it for other people and it’s hard work, but it’s something I love to do. All my shows feel like family reunions. I was able to produce my own comedy album called dive bars I was able to produce my own comedy special called tequila bear and those things led me to being picked up by Laugh After Dark distribution for tequila bear and I shot a 15 minute special with Laugh After Dark that led me to shooting a 30 minute special with Open Bar Comedy. I have been very fortunate to be on ABC VH1 CBS Tubi travel all over the nation and I was considered for a Grammy nomination. I love Comedy. I think My mindset of making sure everybody is happy sets me apart. I truly want people to forget their problems for 90 minutes.
And now I’m on the Internet as a content creator and I have over 70 million views. I’m realizing that now I could share my joy for more or less time all over the world just using my phone.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I have had so many great mentors fluffy, Steve Trevino, Jeff Garcia, Shang, Bret Ernst, carlos Mencia, Gabe Lopez, and so many more. I’ve had so much support for my family and classmates and coworkers and former coworkers and former classmates and friends and family everybody everybody’s cheering me on. They all believe in me they all see what I see. They see me as a Comedian. My parents really played a big part not only do they give me endless material lol. They have stood by me while I did all of the struggling to get where I am. When I moved from Washington to Las Vegas, I did my very first GoFundMe people helped me move to Las Vegas to live in my dreams as a full-time Comedian I will never forget that I am blessed beyond beyond measure.
