Meet Jaime Preston of Parlez Vous Crochet in Glendale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaime Preston.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I learned how to crochet at age 6 from my great Aunt Al who lived in Orange, New Jersey. Throughout my life, I never made anything, well actually, I made one thing and that was a scarf for my Aunt Al, but I didn’t feel adequate enough to make anything fantastic, so when she passed away in 2011, I acquired her crochet hooks and some yarn and came back to Los Angeles and started crocheting by watching tutorials on YouTube.

My first hat I made was a beautiful crochet slouchy hat with a crochet flower on the side. It was so beautiful that I took it off and gave it to a friend who admired it and from there, my lil business started. That first week I got An order of 12 hats to be completed in one week! It was a daunting task but I did it and from there Parlez Vous Crochet was born

Has it been a smooth road?
What’s a business without some bumps along the way? I think as a business there so many obstacles when you are doing it by yourself. I am the creator, the artist, the model, the marketer, the seller, the Mail messenger, the accountant and much more. So for me juggling all those tasks can be a bit much and finding a balance is always a struggle. But with discipline and structure, anything can be accomplished.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Parlez Vous Crochet story. Tell us more about the business.
The name of my business is Parlez Vous Crochet (meaning Do you speak Crochet?) I am an artist out of Los Angeles, California. When I first started crocheting. I was making and designing what everyone else was making, hats and scarves. But, living here in sunny Southern California, well hats and scarves well it’s just too hot for all of that!!

I wanted to find something that would be great for our climate. So I decided to create versatile, trendy and bohemian style pieces for today’s free-spirited individual. We design apparel custom to our California climate, keeping our customers comfortable and looking their best.

ParlezVousCrochet prides itself on mentoring other artists in the crochet world. We have set up and taught at a variety of classes in senior facilities, private homes, craft schools and as well as online Social Media lives via Facebook and Instagram, to help bring crochet culture to the world as well as renew peoples love for the art of crochet.

We are also happy to create crochet patterns and offer supplies to help others to be productive and happy in their crochet life.

Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years?  Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?
The industry has changed just in the past five years. Crochet is innovative it’s exciting, it’s eye-catching, it’s wearable art and so we want to keep it going in that direction in the next 5 to 10 years and get better and better every year.

And as trends change we want to change right with it… Clothing, jewelry headwear, footwear etc. We want to remember what our ancestors taught us and take it the furthest crochet can go!
