Meet Jack Mason-Brase of Jack Jupiter in OC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jack Mason-Brase.

Jack, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started recording with my guitar teacher when I was 13; when I was 15, I got my own micro set up and really jumped into it. Since then, I’ve uploaded over 100 songs to SoundCloud, released three EPs and have played a bunch of shows. That’s the pretty vanilla re-telling of my history, clean and concise. The actual years from 13 to now were filled with mess and chaos but I guess, that mess has made the music better.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My eating disorder and my recovery from it have been the foundation for a lot of my music because those are the forces most of my life revolves around, even still, six years after I first got into recovery. It’s hard to really describe the struggles individually because they pile up quite a bit; for many years tough coming out circumstances, and a struggle for acceptance, coupled with depression put me in a lot of pain. That pain got turned up a notch when my eating disorder really came to consume everything; the summer when I was 16, I was in such poor health that I had to get an IV put in weekly to resupply fluids. I lost my ability to walk more than a block at a time and eventually, I lost my ability to sing. The day before my 17th birthday my recovery began, and it’s been a very rocky road at times, but this past year it’s been fantastic.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Jack Jupiter – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I write, record and perform songs that I produce; the types of songs vary a good bit, genre-wise, from indie electronic to acoustic to candy pop. I’m probably most known for my lyrics, which is quite wonderful; second to that, I’m probably known for my voice, which is also pretty fantastic because I wasn’t a particularly good singer growing up, to say the least. I think I’m most proud of my lyrics, and the stories they convey, but I’m also pretty proud of my production. The production of my songs is something I put significantly more time into than I think people realize.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I just released an EP last month called San Junipero; I’m debating between a couple options right now regarding what specifically my next move will be, but I definitely want to get songs out soon. Over a year, sat between my second and third EP, which is the one I just released; this year, I want to release a lot more songs a lot more frequently. How those songs will manifest, though, I’m not quite sure yet; they might be remixes, they might be acoustic pieces, they might be singles, who knows.
