Meet Inoka Jayasinghe of Irvine/ Mission Viejo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Inoka Jayasinghe.

Hi Inoka, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I come from the beautiful island of Sri Lanka—a place that quietly taught me resilience, grace, and the power of community. Those early lessons stayed with me and shaped the woman I would become. They taught me that you don’t need permission to rise, that independence isn’t rebellion—it’s strength—and that courage begins the moment you stop making excuses and start believing in yourself.
My professional journey spans over 30 years in early childhood education, but my personal journey has been just as transformative. I am a proud mother of three incredible children—a college student at the University of Michigan, a high school senior preparing to take on the world, and a seventh grader who brings constant laughter and purpose into my life. They are my greatest teachers. Through them, I’ve learned that strength doesn’t always roar; sometimes it shows up quietly, steadily, and with unwavering determination.
As a single mother, I faced moments when giving up would have been the easier choice. There were sleepless nights, uncertainty, and times when I had to be my own source of strength. But I chose to rise. I chose to build, to learn, and to lead—not only for my children, but for every woman who has ever been told she can’t.
That choice led to the creation of Creative Minds Children’s House, first in Irvine and now in Mission Viejo. Built from the ground up, Creative Minds is a Montessori and Reggio Emilia–inspired early education program rooted in my belief that children thrive when they are trusted, respected, and given the freedom to explore. Here, learning is hands-on, curiosity is celebrated, and each child is supported in discovering their unique potential.
The journey to get here was not easy, but it was purposeful. I learned that every excuse keeps you one step away from your dream, and every brave decision brings you closer to it.
Today, I stand proud—as a Sri Lankan woman, an educator, a mother, and an entrepreneur—guided by faith, resilience, and a deep commitment to children and families. My story is not just about building a school; it’s about building possibility, one brave step at a time.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting from Scratch: As a single mother and first-generation entrepreneur in the U.S., I built Creative Minds Children’s House from the ground up. There were moments of uncertainty, from securing funding and licenses to finding the right location and staff, all while balancing motherhood.
Overcoming Doubt: There were times I questioned whether I could truly manage it all—the responsibilities of raising three children, leading a team, and creating a school that reflected my vision. Self-doubt was constant, but I learned to channel it into motivation.
Navigating Challenges in Education: Running an early education program is complex—compliance, curriculum development, and creating a safe, nurturing environment for children are never straightforward. There were countless sleepless nights, especially when facing unexpected operational challenges or navigating changes in regulations.
Financial and Personal Sacrifices: Growing a school meant long hours, personal financial risk, and sacrificing some personal comforts. There were times I had to choose between short-term stability and long-term dreams—but I never wavered in my commitment to the children and families I serve.
Breaking Barriers as a Woman: As a woman of color and an immigrant entrepreneur, I often encountered skepticism or underestimated capabilities. I had to prove not only my vision but my resilience and leadership at every step.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
About My Work
I specialize in early childhood education, creating environments where young learners feel safe, inspired, and empowered to explore their world. At Creative Minds Irvine/Creative Minds Children’s House, our program combines the Montessori and Reggio Emilia philosophies, balancing structure with creativity, academics with social-emotional development, and independence with collaboration.
I am known for creating nurturing, hands-on learning experiences that honor each child’s individuality. From baking and mixed-media art to yoga, meditation, and outdoor exploration, our curriculum is designed to spark curiosity, build confidence, and cultivate lifelong learning skills.
What I am most proud of is the community we’ve built—a place where children thrive, families feel supported, and teachers are empowered to lead with intention and heart. Watching a child gain confidence, discover a new skill, or express their creativity freely reminds me why I do this work every day.
What sets me apart is my perspective as both an educator and a mother, coupled with the resilience and vision I bring as an entrepreneur. I understand the challenges families face, the importance of individualized attention, and the value of fostering a love of learning from the very beginning. I don’t just teach children—I partner with families to nurture the next generation of confident, capable, and curious thinkers.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I Like Best About the City
What I love most about Mission Viejo is its sense of community and family-centered energy. The city feels safe, welcoming, and full of opportunities for children and families to grow, explore, and connect. The beautiful parks, scenic trails, and vibrant community events make it a wonderful place to raise children and build a school that truly feels part of the neighborhood.
What I Like Least About the City
Like any growing city, Mission Viejo faces challenges with traffic and congestion, especially during peak school hours. While it’s a minor inconvenience compared to the many positive aspects of the community, it’s a reminder of how important thoughtful planning and flexibility are in creating a smooth daily experience for families and staff.
