Meet Hilary Thomas of Lineage Performing Arts Center in Pasadena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hilary Thomas.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started Lineage as a nonprofit dance company in 1999. Our mission as a dance company is to raise support and awareness for nonprofits as well as to making the arts accessible to all. In 2010 we opened the Lineage Performing Arts Center as a community hub designed to bring the arts together in an affordable, inclusive way. Our Dance for Joy program offers free movement classes to those in the community struggling with Parkinson’s disease, stroke recovery, cancer, Alzheimer’s, and autism. We are dedicated to bringing dance education into the Pasadena public schools and giving those in the community a chance to work with professional dancers and attend professional concerts. Each performance at Lineage – whether music, theater, or dance – is designed to inspire, educate, and entertain while helping to support various charitable causes.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has certainly been a struggle, as I think is probably the case with any nonprofit organization. I am incredibly lucky to be surrounded by a group of incredibly talented artists, teachers, and community members who believe in and support the work of Lineage.

Please tell us about Lineage Performing Arts Center.
We offer a safe space for people to grow both personally and artistically. Whether sitting in the audience, taking a class, or producing one’s own show, the Lineage Performing Arts Center helps to bring many different communities together through the shared language of art.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I honestly can’t think of anything I would have done differently. I’m so proud of how much we’ve grown and I know that every little stumble along the way brought us to the place we are today.
