Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Roselius.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Erica. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As a dancer and swimmer growing up, I was always an active kid. In high school, when I was looking at colleges and deciding on a major my mom brought an article home listing a new subject being offered at many universities: Exercise Science. She knew I was interested in fitness and nutrition and encouraged me to explore the option. Shortly after I was accepted to UC Davis where I completed my degree in Exercise and Sport Science before moving on to a Masters in Sport and Fitness Management.
I always wanted to have a career where I could make a difference in the world and leave a positive legacy. I opened Driven Fitness in 2009 with one simple mission: to inspire the love of movement. Since then I’ve been inspiring clients to find activities that they love to do and motivating them to lead more active, outdoorsy lives.
Several years ago, I created Stretchletics, a 45-minute sports stretching class to help clients recover from workouts and prevent injury by working on balance, coordination and flexibility. It is now the most popular class at Driven Fitness.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t think opening a business is ever a smooth road! Along the way my business has been reincarnated several times as I’ve grown as a trainer and as a person. I’ve also changed formats and class styles in response to marketplace demand. For example, as members seemed to get more and more strapped for time we changed all of our 60-minute classes to 30-minute classes so clients can get in and get out in a flash, all while getting a great workout.
Personally, I’ve struggled with burnout, slow times, my own injuries and setbacks. Every time I pick myself up and remember how lucky I am to wake up every day and help others achieve greatness. My clients inspire me to do better every month and year.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Driven Fitness offers complete health and wellness programs for weight loss and weight gain. We offer small group training and semi-private training in a safe, positive and encouraging atmosphere. We are known for being able to modify for clients who have injuries or limitations, such as herniated discs, arthritic hips and knees, injured shoulders and more. Although some people require one-on-one training, we are able to modify for injuries that many other facilities cannot. I believe this is just one of the things that sets us apart. We also strive to provide a variety of workouts and special events to help keep our clients motivated and inspired.
Many of our members say there are two things they love about Driven:
1. They never get the same workout twice.
2. They’ve found a strong support system within our fitness family that gets them through good times and in bad times.
The support system and family-like atmosphere are what I am most proud of. We’ve had some members 5, 8 or almost 10 years. Lifelong friendships have been created and if one person every suffers a setback or an emergency the group rallies around him or her to help out in any way possible.
What were you like growing up?
I was painfully shy growing up. I often hid behind my parents’ legs when they introduced me to people as a toddler. In some ways I’m still shy to this day! I outgrew most of my shyness when I became a trainer and began speaking in front of people on a regular basis but sometimes it surfaces.
I was a super active kid. I started dancing when I was 3 years old. I wanted to take gymnastics but the town where I lived didn’t have a program so my mom enrolled me in dance. I took jazz and tap for many years. I wanted to be a Rockette when I was young. Well, a waitress during the day and a Rockette at night. That’s what I told my mom.
I stopped dancing when I was 13 to try cheerleading and then competed on the swim team in high school. I was a good student and very involved in clubs. I also always had a job. I started babysitting when I was 12 or 13 then moved on to working at various retail stores. I appreciate that my parents made me work to earn spending money. It instilled a strong work ethic that has helped immensely.
Now, I am an avid mountain bikers, runner, yogi and triathlete.
