Meet Erica Cedeno of ElyElla and Body Language Sportswear

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Cedeno.

Erica Cedeno

Hi Erica, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story is one of ambition and cultural heritage. As a first-generation Mexican American from Chicago, I graduated from Illinois State University in 2002 with a degree in Public Relations and served in the Army National Guard from 1997 to 2005. After moving to Los Angeles, I met my husband, actor Matt Cedeno, and we now have two children.

My career journey transitioned from modeling and acting to a deep-rooted passion for design and entrepreneurship. I founded ElyElla, a gender-neutral children’s apparel line, and I co-own Body Language Sportswear, a women’s activewear brand, which grew awareness quickly on TV shows and movies, it is loved by many celebrities. My brands highlight my commitment to sustainable fashion.

With over 15 years in the fashion industry, I am also a mom, wife, Latina, veteran, entrepreneur, and designer. My expertise in creating and managing brands that resonate with audiences is backed by a sharp sense of style, market trends, and consumer preferences.

Currently, I am expanding my creative pursuits into writing for TV and starting new business ventures. I share more about my multifaceted life on the ‘EntertainHer’ podcast with my co-host Sara Sanderson. I want to inspire young girls like me; my story is a testament to my relentless pursuit of dreams with purpose, proving that for me, the possibilities are endless.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Embarking on the entrepreneurial journey is like navigating a road filled with unexpected twists and turns. Believe me, it’s far from smooth. One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is the sheer unpredictability of it all. There are days when things just don’t go according to plan, whether it’s a slow-selling season or a marketing campaign that doesn’t hit the mark. These moments can be tough, testing not just your resilience but also your ability to adapt.

But here’s the thing – each struggle, each bump in the road, has been instrumental in shaping me both as a person and a businesswoman. They’ve taught me the importance of flexibility and the value of thinking on my feet. When you’re faced with a setback, you learn to look at things from a different angle to find new and innovative solution. In these moments of challenge, I’ve discovered new ways to drive my businesses forward.

So, while it hasn’t been a smooth road, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Every obstacle has been a learning experience, a chance to grow and evolve. These struggles have given me a deeper perspective on my business and equipped me with the skills to innovate and solve problems more effectively in life. In many ways, I view each challenge as a blessing in disguise, an opportunity to refine my vision and strengthen my resolve. As I always say, these experiences make the journey worthwhile.

We’ve been impressed with ElyElla and Body Language Sportswear, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My deep-seated passion for wearable creative expression lies at the heart of everything I do. My businesses, Body Language Sportswear and ElyElla, embody this passion, each a celebration of the human spirit from the joys of babyhood and childhood to the complexities of adulthood. Creating and watching these companies grow from mere ideas into tangible realities has been incredibly rewarding. The apparel industry is notoriously tough, but setting ourselves apart comes down to a genuine desire to make people feel good in their clothes, infusing joy and happiness into their everyday lives.

Our commitment to quality, sustainability, and the celebration of individuality sets us apart. Body Language Sportswear is known for its innovative, high-quality activewear that empowers women to feel confident and strong, whether at the gym, running errands, or simply enjoying a moment of leisure. ElyElla, on the other hand, brings to life the concept of gender-neutral clothing for children, re-inventing the concept of hand-me-downs. Both brands stand firmly against the tide of fast fashion, advocating for sustainability and pride of ownership through meticulously crafted pieces that stand the test of time.

Brand-wise, knowing that our creations play a part in people’s lives fills me with immense pride. Apparel is more than just fabric and thread; it’s a form of self-expression, a way to make statements, and sometimes, a source of comfort and confidence.

I want readers to understand that Body Language Sportswear and ElyElla are more than just brands. They are invitations to celebrate yourself, to embrace sustainability, and to choose quality over quantity. We’re not just selling clothes; we’re promoting a lifestyle that values the environment, cherishes creativity, and uplifts the human spirit. It is this commitment to making a positive impact, both environmentally and socially, that will hopefully resonate with our customers and set us apart in the bustling fashion world.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The apparel and fashion industry is an ever-evolving landscape, and looking ahead to the next 5-10 years, I see sustainability taking center stage. The industry is increasingly moving towards creating items that are not just beautiful and on-trend but are also made to last. The emphasis is shifting towards high-quality materials and craftsmanship. It’s about cherishing longevity in fashion, valuing the story and durability of each piece over the fleeting appeal of fast fashion. This shift is not just a trend; it’s a much-needed transformation towards responsible fashion – a commitment to the planet and future generations.

In the realm of entertainment, I’m excited to see a trend towards greater diversity and representation. The industry is recognizing the power and importance of sharing stories from varied communities and ethnicities. This isn’t just about inclusivity; it’s about celebrating our differences and understanding that it’s these very differences that unite us as humans. Over the next decade, I anticipate a surge in narratives that reflect the rich tapestry of human experience, bringing to light the stories that have long waited in the wings. This shift is a beautiful acknowledgment of our diverse world, and it’s thrilling to be a part of an industry that’s embracing this change.
