Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Dover.
Hi Eric, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started learning the guitar at 11 years old. I knew from about the age of 8 onward that I wanted to be involved with music. My older sister brought home records like Alice Cooper,Elton John and others that I voraciously devoured with much enthusiasm. I studied music on a scholarship in Alabama where I grew up. After playing in a few local bands. I was made aware that the band Jellyfish was looking for a guitarist to tour on their new record “Spilt Milk”.This was my formal introduction to California and Los Angeles in general. After Jellyfish folded. I moved out here full time to chase my music dream. I was working with Roger Joeseph Manning Jr. on what later became the band “Imperial Drag”. During that time I was told Slash of Guns and Roses was looking for a singer for his solo project “Snakepit” I auditioned and got the position. After touring with Slash for about a year I left to continue with “Imperial Drag” as we had procured a record deal with Sony/WORK GROUP. the record came out in 96 and we toured the world for a short time with that. Around 1999 we disbanded and I went into a period of isolation always writing music but not playing live. This is when I came up with my solo endevour “Sextus” and I’ve recently released my newest EP “Hello The Mushroom” Around 2000 I began playing with Alice Cooper and even helped co-write his “Eyes of Alice Cooper” record in 2001.After leaving Alice Cooper around 2002 I went back to the drawing board with writing more for “Sextus”. I haven’t really stopped since.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been both in equal measure. I would say I’ve had it easier than most. Along with it being an incredible journey
there have also been some very hard times. Divorce, bankruptcy you name it. I’ve made a lot of mistakes but that’s just part of life and I have few regrets overall.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m primarily a writer producer performer with a unique and powerful voice( if I may say so). I’m known in the rock circles and a bit in the power-pop outsider cliques. I’m most proud of being my own artist. I don’t really follow trends.
and I don’t compare myself to anyone. For me it’s a personal journey and wherever my music brain tells me to go that’s where I’ll be.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Relax.Don’t let things affect you personally. Never give up. Balance creative living with other interests.
