Today we’d like to introduce you to Emy and Jane LaCroix.
Emy and Jane, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We’ve always been creative and passionate people, but since college, most of our time and effort has been spent on our day jobs. In January, we decided it was time to bring our creativity back to the forefront of our lives. So we made a plan to team up on a project where we can both create things that make us happy.
Now three months in to Sisters From Similar Misters, Jane pours her energy into pointillism pen and ink prints that focus on her passions — natural beauty like celestial designs, gems, and the Zodiac. Emy shares many of the same interests, and hand embroiders small canvases with natural designs also including plants and flowers.
We set a goal for 2019 to participate in our first craft fair as a company, and that will finally happen in May, and we couldn’t be more proud and excited.
Has it been a smooth road?
At this point, it’s still more fun than stress because we’re just starting out, but some of our biggest struggles have been getting accepted to present at a craft fair, and building an online audience for our work. Of course, it can also be hard to find time just to make things when we have full-time jobs and other responsibilities.
Still, we have a positive outlook on the future of Sisters From Similar Misters. We’ve gotten such kind feedback on our work, and every happy customer just makes us more motivated.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Sisters From Similar Misters story. Tell us more about the business.
We like to think we create beautiful handmade art for quirky, spiritual, plant-loving millennial women. We specialize in nature, Zodiac, celestial, and animal-themed prints and small embroidered canvases, which we like to picture sitting on the desk of a boss lady or the apartment of a passionate student. Our work is fun, colorful, and affordable because we want young people to be able to appreciate, relate to, and be able to own art.
Each piece is one of a kind and made with love by the LaCroix cousins. We’ve been lucky and honored that word of mouth has spread quickly for us. While we thought it would be hard to find people who liked our work, the commissions have been pouring in, and the reception has been a pleasant surprise. Maybe that’s because we’re making the kind of art we would want to buy ourselves!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
To us, it feels like there are more young creators than ever, and they’re making art specifically for this generation of sharp, driven, career-focused women. People want art that speaks to them, not just a ready-made print from Target, which is exciting.
It’s opening doors for local creators to be able to share their work with their neighbors and community, and that’s such an awesome thing. We can only hope the trend continues!
