Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Berke.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Emily. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley and grew up thinking I was going to be an actress. During my junior year of high school, I began homeschooling and had a lot of extra time which I spent dragging my friend to any concert I could get into for under $20. I decided to switch my path to music and went off to Drexel University to study Entertainment and Arts management. During my freshman year, I started writing for a small music blog and my first interview was with a local LA band called Green Light Theory.
One of GLT’s members, Scott Waldman, reached out to me after the interview and asked if I was interested in writing about a couple of bands he was managing. I ended up doing two more interviews with Scott’s bands. When I came home for the summer we met for coffee and he offered me an internship on the spot. After interning for a year I was offered a position and have been working with Scott and Waldman Management ever since.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think I got really lucky. I jumped into the music world really fast and I’ve been able to work and learn from an incredible mentor. It definitely gets hard being a student and having to balance school, work, and regular life. There are times when I feel like I’m missing out on great opportunities by being stuck in school, but at the same time finishing my degree has always been my number one priority and I love what I’m studying. Finding the balance can be difficult, but it’s definitely there.
Please tell us about Waldman Management.
We have several artists and songwriters signed with Waldman Management. All of which have their own style and sound. My official title at the company is an assistant, but I hop around and my job can range anywhere from just sending emails to graphic design. I’m there to make Scott’s life a little easier as he juggles managing these artists and producers. When I come home, I also co-host Scott’s radio show “Waldman’s Words” on idobi. I’m always proud to see our artists succeed and get these amazing opportunities. We never stop moving.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have started sooner! I’ve been working in music since I was 18 and I just turned 21. I started pretty young already, but I’ve learned so much in the past three years and I’ve enjoyed every second of it. As a teenager, I wish I knew that this world and all these opportunities existed. I guess now I have to make up for that time I missed.
