Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. William Harris.
Hi Dr. Harris, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am originally from Atlanta, Georgia, and grew up with parents who were both in the healthcare field. From an early age, surgery interested me, and ultimately, after completing college and entering medical school, I found head and neck anatomy to be the most complex and interesting part of the body. After completing a 5-year residency in head and neck surgery at Tulane University, I was then accepted into one of approximately 50 nationwide facial plastic & reconstructive surgery fellowship positions with two Stanford surgeons in Palo Alto, California. I began my private practice, Harris Facial Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics, in Los Angeles straight out of fellowship and have had the good fortune of establishing a busy Beverly Hills facial plastic surgery practice specializing primarily in aging face surgery.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I first came out of fellowship and moved to LA to start my practice, I really didn’t know anyone. My fellowship mentors had undergone an expansion of their practice while I was training, and were very generous in sharing all their knowledge and experiences in developing their practice while I was there. I was then fortunate early on to share office space in two different locations (Encino and Beverly Hills) with two different physicians who helped introduce me to the city and mentored me on the development of a practice in Los Angeles. My medical and surgical training did not come with any business education, so that side of the practice was trial by fire, as they say, and in the early days consisted of making as many connections as possible and getting my name out in the city. Often this involved going door to door to salons and other local businesses to introduce myself, as well as attending events and meeting as many people as I could. The beginning, as expected, was slow, but I was fortunate enough to grow to a point after about a year where I built out the current practice in the heart of Beverly Hills, and we have continued to grow into a busy practice with patients traveling from all over the world for facial surgery.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I founded Harris Facial Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics as a boutique practice focused almost exclusively on aging face surgery and non-surgical treatments. I specialize in the highly sought-after deep plane face and neck lifting technique as well as blepharoplasty, brow lift, lip lifts, rhinoplasty, and fat transfer, to name a few. Patients come from all over the country and the world to see me for impactful yet very natural results with the goal that nobody would ever know they’ve had any work done. I am most proud of the reputation we’ve gained as a practice for very personalized care within a comfortable and non-stuffy environment. The office is designed more like a spa than a medical space, as I am aware that the endeavor of undergoing plastic surgery can be nerve wracking, and we’d like to help curate that experience to be more of a calming one. I always tell patients, if you’re coming in looking to be someone else, then I’m not the best fit. The goal for my patients is to always look like themselves, but a more refreshed and refined version.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I believe just being open to new experiences, and people will always serve you well. For the most part, people want to share their experiences and knowledge when you come to them with genuine interest and without an angle. Curiosity is also key to putting yourself in rooms where you might be out of your comfort zone, but ultimately introduces you to new ideas and mentors.
