Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. David Frame.
Hi Dr. David, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My Story begins in a town called Stockton, California. I was born and raised in the 209 and will forever be a Californian. It’s in my blood, and has been a big inspiration in my work.
Growing up in Stockton equipped me with a unique upbringing. Stockton has had it’s share of problems, but the city is rich in experience. There’s a wide spectrum between Stockton’s crime statistics and community culture. At a time where it feels like most American cities blend together, a unique place like Stockton is one of the last places you can find true Americana. Growing up there gave me fuel for a thousand films. Stories are abundant in Stockton.
I always knew I’d end up in movies. So did everyone else. When I moved to LA I heard every joke about the fact that my last name is Frame. It seemed to be destiny. I thought I’d be an actor. I was always acting. Trying to get into school plays or nativity scenes at church. I always wanted to perform. I wanted to connect with an audience. But as I reached adolescence that teenage insecurity crept in. I became painfully shy. But I still had my head in the clouds and I was desperate to escape reality. So at 13 or 14 I turned to movies. It was around this time I discovered some of my favorite filmmakers.
Kubrick, Scorsese, Lynch, Coen Bros, and many more taught me that a director could have the power to make something more than a film. I learned that a film could connect with people and move them. Change their thinking about things. Making a movie you could take people through something they never thought they would ever experience. So I decided I wanted to be a director. I joined the film club at my high school and produced one short. After that I dropped out of the club and started my own production crew. I figured this way I would have complete creative control over my pictures. Something I continue to chase to this day. I couldn’t pay attention on classes anymore. I couldn’t be dealing with equations or cheating in chemistry. Movies became all I could think about. Stories or shots I wanted to try. There seemed to be so much you could do and so little time.
After high school I spent a year at Stanislaus State University. I studied theatre, which is where I learned I hated theatre. I knew I’d have to get back into movies or I’d die. So I’m 2019 I transferred to the New York Film Academy Los Angeles campus. Making the move to LA was tough. I felt far from my friends and family and committing to entertainment as a career path was scary. But I was still a Californian in California, ready to build a new life. A new me.
My first year I read online you could buy doctorates from churches. So on a gag, I bought one and started introducing myself as Dr. David Frame. When people ask what I’m a doctor of, I say divinity. I started signing it as my name and using it as my credit in my films.
Much like in high school I knew I could never abide making movies for someone else. They’d have to be my pictures, and I’d need end to end control over them. I needed my own entity. But when I wanted more than just a production company. I dreamed of a place for all sorts of artists to create things they couldn’t somewhere else. So, I knew it couldn’t be a studio, it would have to be a laboratory.
Dr. Frames Laboratory is a place for people on every end of the storytelling spectrum to experiment with their crafts. From the creative energies of our stories and productions, to the new technologies we implement, to the marketing and business strategies, my Lab continues pioneering the film medium. Dr. Frames Laboratory will soon be a cornerstone in the entertainment industry and we will continue to build the future of American Entertainment.
We have a slat of Oscar-worthy shorts and a revolutionary vertical series coming soon, and we are prepping our first feature. Everyone at the Lab is real excited to share these projects.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My biggest challenge is one I’ve had all my life; money. Takes a lot of money to make these dreams come true.
It was a tough transition from being a creative individual to a salesman, but it really is a skill that is essential to any walk of life. When trying to get people to invest in my pictures it’s becoming easier to use my enthusiasm and belief in my projects to make other people see the potential. And once they’re done the work really speaks for itself.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Dr. Frame’s Laboratory?
Dr. Frame’s Laboratory is an institution among the creative community. Experimenting in storytelling is never ending, and creatives need a space where they are free to try new things. Our short film department is a testing ground where we can see what ideas work, and what ideas need some fine tuning. This helps us make our bigger projects like our features all the more magical. The lab has become instrumental in developing the new medium of vertical series. we are very proud to be the place attracting the newest and most daring talent.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
One thing people find really surprising about me is my curiosity. When people ask me the type of projects I want to make, I always find it hard to answer. I want to try everything. Comedy, drama, horror, sci-fi, there are almost too many genres. And too many mediums. I can’t imagine myself only making movies for the rest of my life. There’s all sorts of different types of television series. As well as theatre, literature, opera, games, and a whole galaxy of online content. I find with so much to do in so little time I’ve become restless. I’m always experimenting with something new.
