Today we’d like to introduce you to Donia Horton.
Hi Donia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always considered myself a lifelong learner with a deep passion for education. That passion led me into the field, where I’ve spent over 20 years as an educator, working at both the elementary and collegiate levels.
About five years ago, I was reviewing my retirement paperwork and realized it wasn’t growing the way I expected. It hit me that I didn’t fully understand how the account worked. When I started talking to colleagues, I found I wasn’t alone—many of us in education didn’t really know what our money was doing. It was a strange realization: we’re educators by profession, yet we often aren’t educated about our own finances.
That experience sparked something in me. I developed a real passion for retirement and legacy planning, especially for people in fields like mine who may not have access to the financial knowledge they need.
Not long after, I partnered with my eldest son, Keilan Horton, and became a licensed financial professional with World Financial Group. Together, we set out to bridge the gap between education and financial wellness.
Today, through partnerships with several financial institutions, I’m able to offer a range of retirement and legacy planning solutions tailored to my clients’ needs. My mission is to help others achieve financial stability, build generational wealth, and create a legacy they can be proud of.
I truly believe that lasting prosperity is rooted in education—and I’m committed to using both my teaching background and financial expertise to empower others to secure their financial future.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Right after I started my business, the pandemic hit, and suddenly I couldn’t meet with clients in their homes or offices anymore. At first, I kind of panicked—I had to figure out how to adapt quickly. That’s when I shifted everything online. It ended up being a blessing in disguise because it opened the door for me to work with people outside of my state. I got licensed in multiple states, and that really helped me grow my client base in a way I hadn’t originally planned for.
In 2021, I lost my father. He had worked in the finance field too, and after he passed, my business took on a much deeper meaning. It became my way of honoring him and carrying his legacy forward. That’s what inspired the name Legacy by Donia—a reflection of him, and the impact I hope to make through my work.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I specialize in retirement and legacy planning, helping individuals and families create personalized financial strategies that provide long-term stability and generational wealth. My work focuses on empowering clients through education—breaking down complex financial concepts so they feel confident and informed when making decisions about their future. I’m known for taking an empathetic, education-first approach that makes financial planning feel accessible, not intimidating.
What truly sets my business apart is the holistic approach I take to financial wellness. I deeply believe that our financial health is directly connected to our mental, emotional, and even physical well-being. Money isn’t just numbers—it’s emotional. It’s tied to how we were raised, our life experiences, and sometimes even our sense of identity and security.
When I work with clients, we go beyond just the numbers. I create space for open, judgment-free conversations about their relationship with money. We unpack financial habits, fears, and limiting beliefs that may be holding them back. By addressing the emotional side of finances, we’re able to build healthier foundations that lead to more sustainable financial success.
I’m also active in my community, regularly participating in both in-person and virtual speaking engagements. My goal is to normalize candid conversations about money—especially in communities where those discussions have been historically limited. The more we talk about money, the more we learn, and the more empowered we become to grow financially.
I’m incredibly proud that my brand, Legacy by Donia, allows me to combine my passion for education with my commitment to financial empowerment. I’ve been an educator for over 20 years, and I use that experience every day to bridge the gap between people and the often overwhelming world of finance.
I’m especially proud to help people focus not just on wealth, but on legacy—what they want to leave behind for the next generation. I believe the disparities we see across racial, gender, and economic lines are not accidental. Part of the solution lies in education, exposure, and access—and I’m honored to be part of that work.
I offer a variety of financial services designed to meet people where they are, including retirement and legacy planning, insurance solutions, annuities, savings strategies, and debt elimination plans. Whether you’re just starting to think about your future or you’re ready to take the next big step in building generational wealth, I provide the tools, resources, and guidance to support your goals.
More than anything, I want people to know that financial freedom is possible—and that you don’t have to navigate the journey alone. I’m here to educate, support, and help you build a lasting legacy with clarity and confidence.
How do you define success?
Success is the experience of deep, lasting joy in what you do and who you are becoming. It’s not defined by external achievements, but by the fulfillment, meaning, and joy you feel along the way.
My work as an educator has allowed me to find joy in everything I do—whether it’s working in the classroom with students and teachers, or out in the field supporting and educating people in their financial decisions. The joy I feel knowing my work has made a difference—that, to me, is what real success looks like.
