Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique Washington.

Dominique Washington

Hi Dominique, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born December 29th, 1987 in East Palo Alto, but I was raised in Newark, CA. I was adopted at a young age, and ever since I’ve been looking through the world through my lens. I’ve been blessed with the ability to capture and create meaningful art that can be cherished for lifetimes.

As early as the age of nine years old, I remember being at my uncle’s mom’s house in Oakland, CA and she would tell me to record her parties on the old school vitiator hand-held camera she had at that time. I didn’t realize by her handing me a camera to probably at first was to occupy me by giving me a task that turned quickly into my passion I was able to jump-start on a skill I became passionate about at such a young age was great because I carried the light with me till adulthood and do my best to pass the torch to others with the same desire. Everyone has a light in them; some people just need assistance, so don’t be limited by your fears be inspired by your potential.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Every journey is different I try to stay in my own lane and be really low key but obstacles I face while being a photographer is the late hours and early mornings it’s the unseen editing for hours to ensure videos are to the customer’s enjoyment while touching up photos to be framed in a home I try to be efficient and have a fast turn around while I balance my life and motherhood so others can share there moments that were captured with there family. A challenge I have is learning when to bring my camera out, and when to leave the camera at home, sometimes I have a hard time living in the moment and just being but instead, I enjoy viewing the world through my lens and being able to freeze frame time.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m definitely a Nikon kid. I grew up using a Canon as I feel most people do, and it was like the first time I had a Nikon felt like I saw the world differently. Everything just made sense to me Nikon fit my hand like the perfect glove and every time I get a camera it’s an updated Nikon.

Everyone that has photographed with me knows I have this one song I love to play while I shoot, which is Tadow By: Masego, FkJ. I like to create an environment that the customer can relax and be able to be themselves during the photoshoot. Music is the best ice breaker and also helps with the client; once they find their rhythm, I’m able to capture my shot.

What sets me apart from others is myself; no other has my personality, my work ethic, my spirit it’s only me vs me, and I just strive to do my best and be a light to others. The world is so stressful already I’m not trying to cause nobody anymore.

I’m most proud of being a mother. My son helps shape my work and motivates me more watching him with me at photo shoots and him taking an interest and asking me to take his photos while he plays sports is a feeling money can’t buy, and I’m honored to be able to teach him and help shape him for his future.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Most important lesson I’ve learned is to stay in your own lane, walk to your own beat, be kind to others, and keep your word.
