Meet Dexter Story of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dexter Story

Dexter, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started as a musician and music producer, paid for my family through music industry jobs, found resonance in the music of the Horn of Africa, released some derivative records, got an M.A. in African Studies, got my Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology, writing a book now on Eritrean Guayla music (Tigrinya), and looking forward to coming full circle with performances, collaborations and music releases.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I am a work in progress. I’ve made mistakes. My biggest regret is not having released more music and collaborative projects in my lifetime. My challenge is that I am fairly guarded and introverted.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am known as a multi-hyphenate. I do my best whether I am in the foreground or background. I am most proud of my children, the music I have released and the people and communities I have served. I am also very proud of my connection to the Horn of Africa. I am currently turning my Ph.D. dissertation into a book celebrating the Tigrinya music of Eritrea and I recently completed production on Mulatu Astatke’s new Strut/K7 album.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Yes. The art of silence, cooking for self and walking. I also affirmed how grateful and in debt I am to so many ancestors and legends of music. So many courageous souls have paved the way for us to be here in this moment.
