Meet David Capuano of Central

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Capuano.

Hi David, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Born and raised in Mexico City to an immigrant family, I grew up in between a diverse group of ways of thought, primarily a mix of European (Turkish, Italian), Mexican and due to going to an American School. I was always immersed in an array of stories and people. This led me to finishing up highschool earlier than my peers and moving to Los Angeles, at 17 years old where I studied film, later on finishing college at USC with a diploma in Communications. This passion for communication led me to learn 5 languages, Los Angeles being a perfect place to develop communication skills with people from all over the world. My time in Los Angeles became the back bone of my future career as an artist. I later moved to Tokyo, Japan where I have been living part time for over 5 years now. This love for story telling and time spent in LA, are the reason why I believe story telling to be the most powerful medium societally and globally we could have. My photography in particular makes “spirit portraits” its primary theme. Where not only as humans we have stories, the world itself holds so many secrets in between its cracks. I focus on telling these stories through Tendai, Shinto and a vast array of philosophies. However, the primary being, MA – the intentional blank space that is open for interpretation in each piece of art.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been an extremely challenging road. Hiroshi Sugimoto once said that to be an artist, you have to go through many many walks of life in order to gain the structural ability to think unconventionally. Throughout my life I have been so many things, done so many jobs, and started so many businesses, but through and through all roads ended up leading to Rome. These hardships are the sole reason why I’ve been able to grasp myself through challenges and abstract thought.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I primarily specialize in Photography, and am known for extremely abstract photography. I am most proud of my ‘The Tears of Water’ Series, in which I deep dive into the nature of the Yin, Yang and the necessity of containment as a source of growth. The darkness that surrounds the small spaces of definition in the images speak to an individual level of the water, similarly to humans. We are all part of a massive sequence of movement, albeit a “river of life” in which we are all trying to be named as something worthwhile. That struggle becomes a tear of frustration. “The Tears of Water” is an exploration of the release of the ego, and the fusion into the collective. We should not fear nothingness, for if you do, you fear existence as well.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I’ve learned to really stick to what your eyes perceive as important and beautiful. It’s quite literally impossible to ever be understood, as perceptions are individual, and nobody will ever see life as you see it. So keep to whatever you value highly and bask in the beauty of your own personal perception.
