Meet Daniella Patterson of Smoky Eyes Artistry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniella Patterson.

Daniella, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always had a passion for makeup, ever since I was a little girl playing with my mother’s eye shadows and lipsticks. After college, I decided to pursue a career in nursing because well, my Persian parents told me I could not make a living as a professional makeup artist, and I had to be either a doctor, lawyer or engineer.

While working in the hospital, I used to bring makeup with me and do mini makeovers on my patients. I was amazed at how a little blush and lipstick could do wonders on my patients well being. All of a sudden, they would sit up straighter and have a completely different attitude. It wasn’t until I met my now husband (and father of my two-year-old twins) in 2009, that I built up the courage to quit nursing and pursue my lifelong passion. I enrolled into the couture academy of modern makeup artistry program in Newport Beach and started my business Smoky Eyes Artistry shortly after in 2010. I immediately started working doing photoshoots, the miss America pageant, and numerous film/TV gigs.

It wasn’t until my own wedding in 2011 that I realized I wanted to concentrate on the wedding industry. Every bride dreams about what she’ll look like on her wedding day, and I am so proud to be able to help turn that dream into reality. I love working with brides and being a part of their special day.

I wanted to offer hairstyling as well, so I partnered up with several very talented hairstylists/makeup artists and have grown my business from there. With over 200 weddings under our belt, Smoky Eyes Artistry has been recognized by wedding wire and the knot as one of Orange County’s best hair and makeup teams. I feel so fortunate to have my passion be my career, and I am so glad that I took that big leap of faith and decide to pursue my true dream.

Has it been a smooth road?
Thankfully, it has been a smooth road for me since I began my business. I did notice that I was not getting a ton of weddings in the beginning, because I did not offer hairstyling, so I decided to team up with my longtime friend/hairstylist Brittany Fischer, so that I could offer my brides hair services in addition to makeup. Since then, I have hired 6 more hair and makeup artists, and my business has grown substantially.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Smoky Eyes Artistry – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Smoky Eyes Artistry is an on-location hair and makeup team specializing in weddings and special events. We know how important the getting ready process is on a wedding day, so it is our goal to make that as smooth and memorable as possible. All of our stylists have had extensive training in hair and makeup artistry, and we specialize in making sure the hair and makeup will last all evening and look flawless in photographs.

I am most proud of the fact that in over 7 years of being in the industry, I have never had an unhappy client. We have a flawless record on yelp, wedding wire and the knot. I believe, and train my team to do the same, that every individual is unique and that hair and makeup is not a one size fits all. If someone shows you an Instagram photo of what they want their hair and makeup to look like, you have to take their facial features into consideration. We “tweak” accordingly to make sure that look brings out their best features. I also believe that we take our time to ensure that the clients beautiful look will last all evening.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that Southern California is a wedding destination area, and lots of people get married in gorgeous venues throughout California.
