Today we’d like to introduce you to Dakota Katt
Hi Dakota, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My skincare obsession began as a teenager, when I started getting breakouts. I used to beg my mom to take me to get facials and buy me all of the products at the dermatologist’s office. No matter what I tried, nothing seemed to work for my skin! I was determined to learn how to treat my own acne, so I started esthetician school and got my license. Finding a solution to my skincare problems gave me a new level of confidence and made me want to help other people feel good in their own skin. I was very fortunate to start my career in the heart of Brentwood, working with the best clients. There, I learned the power of a good facial, and more importantly, that every client deserves their own personalized treatment. Ten years later, I opened my own studio in Santa Monica in October of 2024. Now, I’m sharing my space with my best friend (shoutout Brows by Sophia!) and get to do what feels like a hobby every day.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
When I first started Dakota Aesthetics, my biggest struggle was learning the business aspect of it all. I knew how to treat people’s skin and provide top-notch services, but the marketing, finances, operations was a whole new world for me. I felt very intimidated in the beginning by all the moving parts and had no idea where to begin. But once I started breaking things down and taking on one task at a time, I realized it wasn’t about having all the answers upfront. I gave myself grace to learn as I went, and with time, it all started to come together.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I like to think that what sets me apart from others is my focus on results-driven facials tailored to each individual client’s needs. I create personalized plans with both short and long-term goals, to ensure real progress over time. I’m hands-on with my clients, deeply invested in their skin’s health, and take pride in simplifying the process—because carving out time for your skin should be easy and painless! My “less is more” approach focuses on what truly works, making every treatment purposeful and effective.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice to new estheticians would be to never stop learning. What you learn in school is just the basics of it all. It’s important for you to take the initiative to keep up with the latest skin treatments because it helps your client understand that you know what you are doing, which will allow them to feel confident and comfortable in your hands. It’s also the best part of being an esthetician because there are always new and fun trends coming out!
