Meet Cornell McTier of Meta-Fitness in Canoga Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cornell McTier.

Cornell, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up watching my mother work hard to provide for us as a single parent. I watched her somehow make time for me, work two jobs, and watched her walk the stage and get a college degree. We didn’t have it easy, but my mother made sure to teach me the value of hard work, the importance of knowledge, and the value of self-love and improvement!

I was always an athlete, starting young playing football in pop warner which lead to high school, and finished after playing division II football in college. I always had a love for science and curiosity towards the human body. I was also always on the overweight to the obese side as I played Defensive and Offensive lineman. I graduated with my Bachelor’s of Science degree in exercise science with a minor in wellness(2014). I hopped on a scale to see I had reached 320 lbs before going into grad school. I knew that in my field, I wanted to show that I had both the knowledge and the ability to change bodies. I dedicated myself and lost over 100 lbs while working as a trainer, interning at the veteran hospital, and going to school for my Master’s degree in Clinical exercise physiology(class of 2016).

I always dreamed of having my own business. I went independent with my training in 2018 renting space and traveling to clients’ homes. I finally found funding to open my own business and gym when a client of mine decided to become my Investor and business partner. We opened Meta-Fitness in the beginning of March 2020.

Has it been a smooth road?
My mother and I didn’t have it easy as She was a single parent. My father was in and out of prison since I was a child so there wasn’t much support for her financially. She also had to raise a young black man in society and raise me to know that I’m more than what people saw when they looked at me. Being a large black kid, I would get mistaken for a man with my large bags from school and harassed by police officers. My mother stopped letting me ride the bus and made sure she drove me to school every day to avoid the environment. Going through to more recent after watching me graduate college twice and supporting me, my mother had two mild strokes in 2018 which took me for a spin! I was then doing my best to bring her back to health while also working independently to make ends meet.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The best part of Los Angeles is the fast pace for me. I thrive in fast-paced living as I’m one that likes to keep things moving. We also have beautiful weather and the ability to hike and visit beaches any time for both leisure and a good work out, I enjoy the diversity of our city as the multicultural influence is engraved into LA and the valley alike. I would like for all areas of Los Angeles to get the same attention. Healthcare and the cost of living are definitely expensive.
