Today we’d like to introduce you to Chaise Dennis.
Hi Chaise, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Being born in Minneapolis was such an incredible experience, but BOY I couldn’t wait to escape the moment I had the opportunity to do so. Growing up was interesting because I always had such a distinguishable interest in all things fashion & art, whether it was being born into a family of local + global icons (Andre Cymone, Prince Rogers Nelson) or having a personality that naturally gravitated to creative atmospheres I knew that I had an opportunity to create a life for myself in the world I admired so much if I wanted it bad enough.
Upon graduating High School, I immediately knew that I needed to be in NYC to create in the world where I saw myself living in and had the opportunity to work with Misa Hylton who has created and styled the likes of Missy Elliot, Mary J Blige, Lil Kim, Diddy, and Jodeci just to name a few. From there I moved on to Los Angeles in 2016 where I made it a mission to gain as much experience as I could working in all facets of the industry. From working on the “tech” side at Farfetch, helping open the LA Dover Street Market as a VIP member, and much more. All to say — that experience led me to many of the opportunities that currently exist in my life as a celebrity stylist here in Los Angeles.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Smooth it has not been! My Journey has had many ups and quite a few “downs that have been learning curves for the better. The biggest setbacks have been most recently in my career before I decided to step out on faith and go freelance full-time. What was that you ask? Simply giving 1000% of myself to companies and clients and not getting what’s deserved back. It’s hard to constantly hear the word no and/or the phrase let’s revisit this 6 months down the line when you see your counterparts whom often time do less the work and reap far more of the reward than you will have the opportunity to receive.
With that being said, I have learned resilience is my biggest weapon. To never look backward, always forward. Also making sure I take a look at what role I play in my struggles so I can identify how to avoid those in the future.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’d like to say that I do many things, but one specific job does not define me. However, my day-to-day job is a celebrity stylist. I often times am working on a tentative schedule so I like to think of my life is on the edge. My clientele strongly consists of actors (Ronen Rubinstein, Tramell Tillman) but I’ve worked with Kid Cudi and Swizz Beats to name a few outsides of that industry. My aesthetic strongly lies in the atmosphere of simplicity and minimalism and people always are curious as to why? Nothing is harder to achieve than simple. It’s easy to overdo things but mastering the art of simplicity is a challenge.
I also host fabulous parties and conversations at social clubs like Soho House and Neuehouse. (My Karaoke bash has become a hit with the Los Angeles audience.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Covid-19 has taught many of us the importance of resiliency and appreciation. My biggest lesson if some would consider it one would be to have a tribe of those you appreciate, love, and consider family. Especially some within the industry you work in. People will do so much for you if you do right by them and that’s one thing that really sticks with me as I continue to live my life here in Los Angeles.
