Today we’d like to introduce you to Cecile Berkowitz.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am a native Angelino with a big love for vintage. I started hand embroidering on vintage wares about three years ago as a vessel to start making art again. I am now doing chain stitch embroidery on vintage clothing as a means to tell stories from the past and create images in thread.
Please tell us about your art.
Everything is done on a 1930’s chain stitch machine. The machine is led by a handle you hand crank under the table which allows you to basically draw in thread. The machine itself inspires a different era. I seek out vintage wares ranging from the 1900-1970s and go from there. Each piece of clothing is it’s own with where it’s from and what it inspires. I try to create images that drum up a sense of nostalgia, strands of strange, comedy and a feeling for classic Hollywood. It’s exciting to embroidery things on a palette that can tell a story and bring memories to the person who wears the finished piece. I like to use vintage for its sustainability and its history.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
A continuous balancing act between buying vintage and making the pieces.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
You can find my items through Instagram and my web store. I am always taking customs and try to regularly post things that will be available
