Today we’d like to introduce you to Camryn Barrett
Hi Camryn , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have always had a passion for fashion which I inherited from my dear grandmother. We’ve bonded over fashion, style, and art my whole life. Because of this I always knew my career would revolve around fashion, I just never knew what I was meant for specifically. At the fresh age of 19 I interned at a popular showroom in Los Angeles, Brooklyn Pr. From my first day there I fell absolutely in love with the industry. When working in a showroom there are about 10 wardrobe stylists who walk in and out daily. As I began connecting with the stylists walking into Brooklyn Pr, hearing their job details, clients etc. I realized styling is what I need to do. From there I assisted a few iconic wardrobe stylists such as Wilford Lenov and Lisa Smith Craig. I went on to opening up my own styling services and my very first job going out on my own was styling singer, Inas for the Billboard no.1 event in 2023, which I will forever be grateful for. It takes most people years into their career to land a high pressed cover event like Billboard’s or client like Inas, so for this to be my first made it apparently clear I was meant to be in my career field. Of course I have my mini struggles in my career at times, but following your passion is never a simple walk in the park… and if that makes success more valuable, I’ll take the challenges any day.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like I mentioned in my previous answer following your dreams is never easy. Personally, I feel my biggest struggle was getting others to no longer see me as a styling assistant but to see me as a professional stylist myself. Assisting other stylists you meet so many people in the industry and if you’re planning to go out on your own and open up your own services you will definitely be running into/working with those people again, and it can be a bit difficult initially for them to see you as your own boss. Another struggle I have faced, which is a worldwide pandemic, is imposter syndrome. I will get to set for a big client and completely forget who I am sometimes, why I’m doing this, how I’m doing this… but as soon as I start putting some clothing pieces together or talk to my team for the day I remember instantly that I was made for this.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My 3 main professions at the moment are wardrobe styling, modeling, and tooth gems. I am mostly known for my works in wardrobe styling. I am most proud of how far I’ve come in all of career aspects in such a short amount of time. I believe what sets me apart from others is the fact that I put myself and my personality in all of my work, anything I produce has 100% of my passion in it and everything I produce can only be done by me.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Whatever career field you are in, I strongly recommend working under, assisting, or even just connecting with someone higher up in your dream field. Working with others who are already established in my field allowed me to learn certain things I probably would’ve never discovered on my own and build great connections.
