Meet Caihui Chen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caihui Chen.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Caihui. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have long been interested in graphic design since middle school. I graduated from Beijing Foreign Studies University in 2019 with a B.A. in Law and English, and then I came to CalArts. I am pursuing my MFA in Graphic Design at CalArts now.

Has it been a smooth road?
I think the biggest struggle comes from inside. Everyone yearns to be the best in the field, but sometimes one’s talent and efforts just won’t’ match the ambition. I forget who said it, but there does come a time in a man’s life when he realizes that he’s not going to play center field for the New York Yankees. Cruel as it is, this is what I find of myself from time to time when I see great designers’ work. But this could be another way of pushing myself forward.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I still love print media even though it is no longer a dominant part of graphic design industry as it was. I specialize in typography. I love magazines from the 80s –90s, such as Emigre and Ray Gun. I love the energy and the spirit these compositions solely express. And I like the feeling of the rugged texture of paper and the subtle thickness of ink.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Santa Clarita is a very good neighborhood. I like that it is equipped with lots of malls and restaurants, and everything I need would be within 10 minutes of driving. It has great view. The neighborhood is always quiet and I have met only very nice people. It would be perfect to live if only the temperature during mid-summer were a little bit lower, haha.
