Meet Byron Leung of Arcadia Ca

Today we’d like to introduce you to Byron Leung.

Hi Byron, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Magic has always been a hobby of mine since i was 4 years old. I grew up always performing little fun tricks to my classmates here and there. Parallel to magic i was also into tennis as my sport of choice. I was focused on making tennis my career and aspiring to be a professional tennis player someday. In high school, i was showing my friend a new magic trick i learned during spanish class and my teacher immediately shut me down and made me see him during lunch, i figured i was in trouble and so i went to see him; it was that moment of meeting him that my magic career was going to go in a different direction. It turns out my teacher was a former professional magician back in his younger days and he took me on as his student and improved everything i knew about magic. In college i continued to focus on training and becoming a professional tennis player, while simultaneously i was performing side gigs, like birthdays and weddings as a magician, to help fund and support my tennis career i didnt think of anything of it, except that i was doing both things i loved and making a career of both. Later into my professional tennis career i got into a car accident and i was stuck recovering for several months; it was then that one door closed and another door opens as my magic career completely took off and i was getting booked for many gigs left and right and was able to make a stable career our of magic.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The transition from one career to the other was relatively smooth, but definitely the biggest challenge was putting myself out there into the world to get the recognition and reputation to be able to continue to do what i love.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a professional magician, i specialize in both mentalism and close up sleight of hand. In the magic community im known for my experience, knowledge and technical abilities, which lead to me earning a huge respectable reputation within the community. Ive worked with many talented magicians and helped them through their magic careers to help them improve their magic and guide them in the right direction of finding success in a struggling field of work. Im a specialist when it comes to close up sleight of hand and card magic; a lot of times i get approached to do workshops on perfecting and learning proper techniques.

Something I am massively proud of, is that I am one of the founders of a small group of magicians known as the King Makers. We are a group of magicians, that each have a special unique talent within the magic community and we help each other grow in a positive environment. It was a project that I worked hard with a couple of partners in getting this group together, as we really want to help pave the way for the future of magic. Through the King Makers we were able to even start our own produced ticketed magic show here in LA, called the Lucid Mystery Magic Show; and we have hit six sold out shows to date and people can find us on Eventbrite or @LucidMagicShow on instagram.

I think what sets me apart from a lot of magicians is that i am constantly learning to improve my own magic and understanding the details myself so i can properly help others improve at a faster rate. My knowledge and my experience in both technical and performing gives me that advantage over most and allows for me to earn the title that was given to me.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is i love the art so much and i only wish that a lot of magicians out there take it nearly as serious as i do. I care that the quality speaks greater over quantity and that some of these newer, younger magicians needs to understand that it does matter in the work you put in.
