Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Knight.
Hi Brooke, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been passionate about education and history in particular, so starting Honest History was a way to combine this passion with a vision to educate the next generation of thinkers and doers. We started Honest History in 2018 with a mission to inspire kids (and their adults!) to make a positive impact on history themselves. My husband and co-founder, David, and I have been thrilled to see the impact of our publications and media on children through the stories they share with us. Today, we are fortunate to be one of the fastest growing children’s publishing and media companies; you can find Honest History magazines and books around the world and our podcasts have a global audience of kids and adults.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
From the beginning, we’ve focused on creating quality content for children. I think this focus has allowed us to grow steadily since we launched and given us an ability to weather the obstacles along the way. Of course, launching a company is never easy and there have been many challenges along the way. The risks in the beginning are quite substantial, especially without outside funding because it’s “make it or break it” every single day. I think this mindset fueled our growth because when the only option is to succeed, you have to find a way to fight through challenges and win. This is especially true when you have employees counting on you and the business.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Honest History?
We create educational children’s publications and media, including magazines, books, podcasts, classroom materials, and digital content, with more exciting additions to our product lineup coming soon. As a company, we focus on creating high-quality content designed to maximize a child’s interest and learning. Everything we do, from the stories to the physical format of our publications, are created with intention. As a young company entering a world full of legacy media and publishing, we’re proud to offer something new for parents and kids (and anyone else just curious about the past). Check it out and come join us on the adventure!
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memories always include my three sisters. We did everything together, and they are the cornerstone of my childhood. One cherished memory I have is sledding down a massive hill just outside our house. We would take turns using our two sleds and trekking up the large hill in full winter gear. Looking at the hill now, it’s not that impressive, but my memory of it was huge and my sisters and I would spend hours in the winter months sledding down it and enjoying each other’s company.
